I'm not sure how to do this but I want to complain to the moderators of this site. I have just had an image go thru my head of 2 grown men chasing each other around a green swathe on ride on lawn mowers........

Doh, 13,000 for CNC retrofit on a 2,000 mill doesnt make too much sense to me. Great for production work where you have a bunch of them and are only paying one machine minder but not much good for us mortals who only have a single machine and dont make 100,000 parts. ( plus I'd have to learn cnc programming

You can build your own CNC kit pretty easily from what I've seen. Ebay always has good servos and drivers for cheap, you can make brackets, buy some pulleys, belts, and an old PC. It seems to me you can do all this for under $1000. Just an example of something you can buy out of the box:

They are around $2000-$4000 but search for diy cnc or homebuilt cnc or homemade cnc and you can find tons of info on how to build your kit cheap.

Very nice mate, I'll have yo look into a "home brew" CNC kit, I really couldn't justify 10K + for a hobby business, but I'd be happy just to automate mine so I've got power feed to save my arms, ha ha! Thanks for that though, I'll check it out later!

You're right, when I was installing that option, I asked the customer why he wanted to put a $17,000 option on that machine. Of course, it was an old four horsepower bridgeport that I rebuilt and scraped in, making that bill alone around $30,000, essentially ,making it better than new. His reply was simply "I can't buy a new machine of this quality." It has its place, and it's probably not in Terry's garage. I'll have one, but that's because I build them.

Now for the other thing... So what if Terry and I have this garden tractor fetish thing? So what if we're riding around, naked, howling like a couple of schoolgirls? So what if I'm wearing nothing but a black cowboy hat, toting a big blaster squirt gun? So what if our wives are on the porch, shaking their heads in disbelief at us? That warm ozzy sun caressing our grown men skin... AAaahhhh. (Ah #$%*, I can't stop laughing) At least we're not out building choppers and running over moped drivers!!!

Well my yards not even big enough to warrant me keeping my old Cox Lawn Tractor Strokey, but out the back of my place there is literally miles of parkland, just waiting to be mown, ha ha!

Ok, back on topic for a sec, (about my average, ha ha!) I did some more on Seans fork brace today, rounded off the ends, beadblasted the whole thing after modifying the "T" logo to something rather rude at Seans insistance! I hope no-one here is offended.............. Cheers, Terry.

Two ways to do it, Old sewing machine motors work well, one each side of the X, one feeds left the other feeds right. keep the foot controls or pop for a rheostat and on-off-on switch to select direction. If you make the required pulleys heavy enough, (either mount them behind handwheels, or replace them altogether) you have a flywheel effect for when you hand feed. (pop the drive belts to go full manual) actual mounting is something you have to pattern for the mill. I set up my old mill like that, and didn't realize how much I liked it till I got my little clausing that's full manual.

second way is a cordless drill with a socket adapter driving the nut that holds the handwheels on, did that last week on the clausing for a long cut (32 inch cut, and I have a 24 inch table, 3 seperate setups for the same cut)

Nice work on the brace, I've been considering something similar, but haven't finalized axactly what fender etc I want to run on mine, so I have been holding off on it.

G'Day Guys, thanks for the compliments, I'm particularly happy that you like it Sean, as I owe you for quite a few favors, ha ha! I've got to fo a couple of minor mods and I'll get it out to you next week mate!

As far as making more goes, I've got an idea in my head for making a very similar brace that will be a lot less labor intensive, therefore more reasonably priced.

Once I get it done (maybe this coming weekend) I'll post a new thread with pics and we'll start talking about orders! Cheers, Terry.
