I have a pair of vice grips that are the parallel jaw type. I tape them with a wrap of duct tape and clamp close to the block  as possible. I do t like the double nut because it is to easy to twist that flimsy shaft.
with the pliers wrapped and a firm straight on twist they always come loose without marring the shaft

wide 6mm nuts are a big help if you double nut it.  get them real tight
use the closed end of a box wrench on the inner nut to prevent bloody knuckles.
light taps from a hammer on the end, under removal pressure, will help break it free.
careful to not bend it.

Thanks guys, got it finally. did the tape thing. It had never been out. groaned, and broke loose.
tried the 2 nut deal first, but as flybox wrote, they need to be wide. Again, thanks.

I will use that information if needed definately. I am on my way tearing it completely
down, and am planning on master gasket and seal set from cyclex. Not sure if it comes with that particular o ring or not. This isn't the first necessary part during
tear down that I'm gonna need later. Had to destroy the oil pump screen, wich is no longer made too.  >:(
