Outstanding news that you're going to stay involved!  Subscribed.

James,
I have a spare 78 gas tank as well.  If you need it, let me know and it's yours.  I believe the 77 and 78 tanks were the same.  But it is a K model tank though.

It has the hinged cover but it's just not shown in the photo.  We had started stripping the paint off the tank when I bought the other tank (because the other tank came with badges, the original gas cap and a couple of other things.  I bought all of that set off eBay for cheaper than I could have purchased the badges.

Since this tank was going to require some sanding/smoothing on the Bondo that was on the bottom of it when we bought it and because they had used filler to fill in the brackets that hold the tank badges, we figured it was easier to just use the new tank.

You can't tell but the tank had already been coated on the inside when we bought it.  It appears the PO did a decent job.

What it doesn't include is the key lock or the petcock.  Those weren't on there when I bought the bike.  Again, if you want it, just PM me your address and I'll drop it in the mail asap to you.  No charge.

So let me tell you how hard it is to pull half a motor, with one leg. so in order for me to pull it I have to hold my self up with one hand one leg and pull the motor with the other, what a work out I'm done for awhile a lot of work gezz. cant wait to try and put a complete engine in I dont think I can do it to heavy for just me. going to have to find some new shocks have a good day guys James

James,
Regarding the shocks.  If they're just rusty, try purchasing a gallon of Metal Rescue ($25).  Go to http://www.metalrescue.com and click the "Buy Now" link at the top.  Enter your zip code and it'll show you the nearest Home Depot that carries it.

All you have to do is put the Metal Rescue in a pan....put the shocks in it and let them soak.  Every few hours, take them out and wipe them off.  Then put them back in until all the rust is gone.

If you look at the early pages of my build thread, you can see a before/after photo of my shocks and what a great job it did on them.

Springer - easiest to lay the bike on its side to lift the frame off or on, depending upon installation or removal of the frame. Gotta be easier than lifting with your recent surgery!

Cheap replacement shocks are Progressives. Regardless of the rust, stock shocks were pretty poor.

Here's a couple pics of the tank I mentioned. Not sure of the style is consistent with your frame or year, let me know. Paint is stock, inside is very clean. One small ding in the top that I cold probably push out too before sending, if it's a tank you want.

Yeah, I picked this up graciously from SohRon on the off chance that I might do a 550 for my wife, a more stockish resto mod. But alas, she was along the other day when I ventured into a vintage bike shop, threw her leg over an R100/7 and announced she had found her new bike. Well, could have been worse, might have been in a jewelry store  ::)

So plans for her 550 are gone, and am on the hunt for 2 more airheads.
