Christmas wish list- Tire changer
« on: December 24, 2014, 09:54:25 AM »
Two part thread.

Who has one of these?   What model, and is it worth it?  It seems like we need to change a tire at least once a month, with perhaps a year backlog waiting on all that Christmas cash for the tires (that ain't coming  :'().

And, what do you want Santa Clause to bring you tonight?

Don't buy harbor freight, I had one, never worked well, Coats are great, pricey so not practical for home use. Unless u find good price on used one

I've had Cycle Hill tire changer for about two years. It's made by No Mar, but a little more economical. I've changed about 100 bike and car tires with it and I am pleased with it's performance. It's paid for itself a couple times over.  Like most machines, there's a learning curve with it, but it didn't take long to get the hang of it. It is strictly a manual machine and at times it does require some grunt to use. Some tires are very easy and some can be difficult. The funny thing is, I never know which is which until I'm done. I'm guessing that the more expensive machines are easier to use, but for the money,  it can't be beat.

Thanks for the feedback. Ours might end up being a shaft coming up out of a steel table to bind the wheel  down  onto  a milk crate through the axle hole. More just to clamp the wheel in place where you can work all the way around from top and bottom.

I used to use a workmate foldup work table with a piece of all thread through the center to change tires. The newer heavy tires could be somewhat of a struggle, but at least they were off the ground at a good working height.

I have owned a Coats 220 for over 20 years starting when I owned a shop. Literally a thousand chenges later it works great. That being said it is expensive compared to the No Mar units which I think are great tools. If you have friends with bikes it makes the purchase even more logical. ;)

Yeah, plus a growing army of kids trying their best to wear out  dirt bikes.

I  lucked out with my local auto shop, they have one that works for motorcycle tires just well enough and it doesn't cost me much as I know the owners well. Would certainly be nice to have if I had the garage space for it. Many of my neighbors have motorcycles, sure they'd love it.
