It's a sickness! 1976 CB550 resto/rebuild
« on: December 26, 2014, 06:19:34 PM »
Thought I was done with building bikes, or at least Hondas, after the last build, but picked up a 1976 corpse and decided to reanimate it. Will try to keep it stock as much as possible.
In the second picture you can see a snake tha came with the bike!

Had a leftover motor lying around. Gave it a quick overhaul. Should work just fine.

More parts reassembled. Ordered new front fork tubes. The originals are just too rusty on all of the ones I have seen.

So, are you using a lathe to turn the parts as you're polishing them?  If so, that's freaking brilliant!
Love the way you were able to get those hubs so shiny.  Those things are a b***h to polish down inside those grooves.

Yes, I use my lathe to shine all things round. Works really well, especially if I crank up the rpms.  Grooves were a #$%* to clean up, but a set of chainsaw files from Harborfreight worked beautifully-just the right diameter. Afterwards, it's all elbowgreas.

Today I learned, while I wasn't previously in the market for a lathe, now I am.  :)

550 a sickness? How can that be? I'll bet it's the most healthy thing that you can do.
You could be out in the bars all night ,or chasing skirts,or even knocking off liquor stores.
Nooooo. This is a very healthy activity.
Excellent for eye hand co ordination, occupies the mind when otherwise flatlineing in front of the TV or at work, usually centers you to a geographic area where you can be found during any emergency...or when it's time to do dishes .., whatever.
The point is, that you are now easily available , you are improving your mind and techniques Thus making your time more valueable. You must be feeling the effects of all the extra energy, and vitality that this activity provides.
Withdrawl from said activity are sometimes severe and may cause diarrhea or upset stomach ,erratic behavior and depression, and in most cases, boredom.
In the event this happens to you, buy 2 550's and start another build thread in the morning.
The preceding is a public service message.

A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

Opened and closed the snowboarding season.

Been there.
Long time skier with no major injuries.
First day on a board was Hell, twisted an ankle on a nasty spill and had to hobble to the bar and end the day. Tequila killed the pain...
