Title advice needed
« on: January 02, 2015, 03:33:25 PM »
Has anyone ever retitled a bike here in the states with a salvage title?  The bike is from KY but I live in TN.  Bike is 40yrs old.  The weird thing is the bike has zero damage of any kind and hasn't had a nut turned on it.  Just wasn't running.  PO says when they got title in mail it was mistakenly marked salvage but they never did anything to rectify. The VIN doesn't come up stolen or anything like that.

Any thoughts?  How hard would it be to re-title non-salvage, or just insure as salvage title, etc.  Can the bike ever be "clean titled" again vs some off color title?

Thanks for any help

Vehicles are given salvage titles when they are totaled by an insurance company, typically from a major accident or flood.

Never heard of a bike getting a salvage title from not running. Personally, I would not believe what the PO tells me.

Call your local DMV is see if the bike can be inspected to be able to change the title.
Good Luck.

My k6 comes with salvage title, ride just as great as my other bikes, never stranded, never broke down, never have to limp home with it yet, like my other bikes do

What difference does a Salvage title have on a 40 year old bike?
Hell , 1/2 of the rebuilds here were junk when they where gotten.  5 of mine were totaled by the insurance company when they were flooded in Irene , 8 or 9 were either in the junk yard or should have been...bought back...rebuilt...and registered. I haven't had an issue getting them insured, they don't make me drive in the granny lane, I didn't have different plates that say "JUNK" on it, I have encountered no restrictions as far as I know yet.
The only problem I can see is that there isn't a "restored " title available for people like us..
But...I never sold any of my machines either ...so, are there some restrictions that I don't know about at point of resale? What is the concern?
I guess different states have different rules...how bad can it be?

Just register it under the salvage. It could only 'possibly' hurt resale but if it's a nice bike and some buyer gives you a run around over the salvage part tell them to walk

Thanks guys.  I'm really only concerned about the resale and insurance issues.  I've been reading since I posted and it looks like I can get a "branded" title in TN (with a lot of work) but it will then be a "rebuilt" title.  So who knows...at any rate I'm not going to let it slow me down.  I'll cross that bridge when I get there.  Besides if what I'm paying for parts is any indication, by the time I get ready to sell I'll just part it out and retire from the proceeds.  Ha.
