76 550 k2 wiring help
« on: January 02, 2015, 07:18:15 AM »
Hi All,
just been beating my head against the garage wall as can't get to grips with my wiring fault.
Main problem is that I need to know is the two wires coming out of the starter solenoid yellow/red and green/red should they be live or are they an earth. The reason I ask this, as someone in the past has given the green/red a separate live from another source.
I found out the clutch/neutral diode is kaput so have ordered a new one. Perhaps damaged due to loop wire.
Also should the starter button switch wires be used as a earth return to the solenoid or a return live.
Trying to sort before calling auto electrician so any advice would be great.
Any help most welcome gary

The clutch switch directly grounds the solenoid coil, the neutral switch grounds it through the diode (so the "neutral" light isn't on when the clutch lever is pulled in). Remove the diode and you just lose starting in neutral with clutch engaged, you can still start it by pulling the clutch lever in.
The start switch provides power to the coil (plus to the headlight when not actually starting, on many models).

According to the schematic, the button supplies the ground to the y/r .   There are two areas where I would focus  first. The connection in the headlight from the handle bar switch.   They pull apart easy.  A meter will help.  The other is the plastic connection to the starter relay.   You can bypass the switch by grounding the y/r on the starter relay with the key on. The black on the the relay is 12v when the key is on.  First make sure this schematic matches your bike.

Sorry for delay as been out all day,
Thank you all for you advice.
Yes I have realised that the 76 550k is wired different from say the 75 model.
The wiring diagram in the 76 handbook seems correct as it shows the diode.
I still have a problem when you say the yellow/red and the green/red are live as the green goes to earth via the clutch
switch or neutral switch. I can understand the yellow/red being live as a return from the starter button.
Perhaps I'm thinking to hard, yes the diode is u/s as when pluged in neutral comes on when clutch pulled in.
what does not help is non standard handle bar switched fitted, they look like Honda ones but are not so wiring colours
are not 100% the same.
Please keep talking with any other suggestions please.
thank you gary.
PS this bike only has one fuse live out of 3 is that correct
