tap sizes for these old fours
« on: January 03, 2015, 08:05:08 AM »
I was looking for a tap and die set the other day at a local tool shop.  I didn't see much in the way of metric sizes there and I don't need the dies anyway.  So I got to looking around on Snap On's site and saw they sell them individually.  Best I can tell form working on these bikes, I really only need a few sizes:  M5-.8, M6-1.0, M8-1.25, M10-1.25 and 1.5, M12-1.5 and 1.75.

Is there really anything else I need other than those?

I remember the mirror threads being weird and having a tough time finding a helicoil kit (locally).  M10-1.25 I think.  Yeah, I may invest in some good thread repair kits too.  I'm just tired of these cheap tools breaking...

I would not get the taps at SnapOn..but they should be OK.
Decent quality are not that expensive.  KBC tools if near you should be way cheaper that SnapOn.
If you are not cutting new threads, machine taps would be OK.

M20x1.5 is the oil galley plug and oil filter bolt,  valve covers are M30 I think, oil tank are M22 and M24 or M26 and for idle set screw on old carbs you would need M6x.75.  But what you have will do I think.

There isn't an M10x1.5, M12x1.5 or M12x1.75 that I know of.  M12x1.0 is used for the rotor bolt and all the rest of the M12's are 1.25.  There are also some  M3x0.5, and M4x0.7 used on turn signals, handle bar controls, tail light, etc.  An M6x0.75 is only used for tappet adjusting screws and the rest of the M6's are 1.0,  The cam sprocket screws are an M7x1.0 and the connecting rod screws are an M7x0.75.  And yes the mirror thread is M10x1.25.

An M6x0.75 is only used for tappet adjusting screws and the rest of the M6's are 1.0,

Here is one more M6x0.75 for you - if you know what it is.

This "Thread Restorer" kit has served me well, for both Honda CB's as well as automotive purposes. Occasionally I'll need a tap here and there, so I'll pick up a single tap when needed:

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-48-pc-sae-metric-thread-restorer-kit/p-00942275000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&kpid=00942275000&kispla=00942275000P&kpid=00942275000&mktRedirect=y

This kit actually has more metric tools than mine. I had purchased mine probably fifteen years ago and I think mine only has six metric tools instead of the ten shown with this kit.

Found it. This is the kit that I have, and it even costs more for fewer pieces!

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-40-pc-tap-and-die-set-master/p-00952105000P?prdNo=3&sellerId=SEARS

The thread restorer tools work for me in probably 95% of the problem fasteners I encounter. The other 5% either require Helicoil, fastener replacement, or both.
