Well plugging away through some components for my next build.
These I will need some serious help with because I am fairly ignorant on these carbs.
Bought them a while ago and soda blasted them. Been sitting in the shop since. Now I dug them out and they will be getting the servicing that they need.
Few things need to be figured out first.
-What exactly are these?
-Where can I get parts?
-Is there a source for brass to tune with?
-Any historical information, such as manuals, pictures, ect.
History:
From what I understand these are Mikuni/Solex PHH in either 32 or 36mm. Basically they are much smaller and lighter then the more normal 40/44mm units. I have seen exactly one and one half other sets of these in all my years of doing this. A few seem to have been used on Harleys as well, would be super interesting to hear from someone that ran them. Closest other carb that I have found was used on some euro cars like Fiat, Alpha and Merc. Right now my hope is that some of these carbs will have the same service basics that I need.
My Carbs:
Here is how they looked when I got them. Dirty, but not seized, broken, cracked or anything major. Nothing seemed to be missing.
I took them all apart and soda blasted them at home. I use an open air blaster from harbor feight and good old fashion armen hammer soda. It makes a hell of a mess but works well and is cheap. Sure there are better set ups, but its what I do.
They cleaned up really well. Was happy to find that the inside was extra crazy clean.
Like I said I put these back in storage after cleaning them, thought I had a picture of these next to the “full sized” ones but could not find it. The other manifold in the picture is for the full sized carbs so it give a good idea how much smaller these are
Looks like I need to track down the pilot jets. I think I know where they are, trouble is they are back on long island…..
Unsure what the correct term is for these parts.
Like I said, the insides were very clean so no worries about the brass.
Now I remember that I broke one of the “choke” arms. Will need a replacement. Tried to JB Weld the arm and it holds well, but seems to limit the travel. Might try and grind some of the weld back and see if they does the trick.
Accelerator pump is the same story, clean but in need of service.
Markings:
Maybe some of the markings will help with identifying parts.
The manifold itself is has 8635 cast into it. No other marks, I had assumed that the manifold was made by Branch but really don’t know.
Carbs have an N3 and PHH stampings. Unsure what the N3 refers to. PHH is for the style of carbs, dual throat side draft.
Butterflies have 170 stamped into them. I assume this is for the size, will have to find out.
Parts:
The goal is to completely service and rebuild these carbs so that they can be used again. So far my research has given me a few leads. I also apologize to those that I have already asked for help from and forgot or misplaced the information. This thread will also serve to organize the information.
These guys have some good pictures of the parts. Seems that they have some of the needed parts.
http://www.fiatplus.com/SOLEX-32-PHH-MINOR-CARB-KIT.htmlRemember how I said I have only ever seen one and one half other set ups like this? Well the half was a single carb and a manifold on ebay a few years ago, and the whole unit was owned by Ricky-Racer. He gave me this place. I think he was able to get the needed parts from them for his set up. I have sent them an email and hope to be able to get everything figured out.
http://www.carburatori-italia.comMy Italian sucks….took Latin in high school though….lol
I will order enough parts to rebuild these this time as well as some extra service bits to keep in stock while running them. Would also like to get some extra brass to be able to tune with. I assume that the brass in it now was set up for a CB750, but zero idea what engine mods or other info.
Would be amazing to find an exploded view diagram of these carbs to know if anything is missing and help better service them.
Mine came without any air filters or stacks, so will need to figure something out with that too.
Needs:
-Pilot Jets
-Gaskets
-O Rings
-Accelerator pump
-“Choke” part
-Air horns, Stacks, Filters
-Info on set up
Anyone else ever seen these little guys run? Have any information about them?
