CycleX 2nd (.50) oversize pistons installation help '76 CB750F
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:56:21 PM »
Hi, I have a 2nd (.50) over size piston kit from CycleXchange (Part#ENP-005) for my '76 CB750F Super Sport rebuild. Cylinders are rebored and ready. I've emailed Cycle X a bunch of times asking for installation instructions with no success, pretty frustrating. I hope someone here can help ...

- The rings seem super hard to get on to the pistons, has anyone installed one of these kits before? What's the technique?
- Does the silver ring go at the top of the piston or the second groove? I assume that's the chrome one?
- The arrows on the crown point towards the exhaust ports, right?
- What's the run in process?

Here's a link to the kit (you have to scroll down just past 1/2 way) http://www.cyclexchange.net/Engine%20Parts%20Page%20(Non-Cafe).htm

Cheers, C.

I used the first over kit from Cycle X. To answer your questions:

- The rings seem super hard to get on to the pistons, has anyone installed one of these kits before? What's the technique?
A piston ring expander would be of great help here. Otherwise you have to go as gently as possibly and slowly work it around while opening it up as little as possible. They can and will break if you push them too far.

- Does the silver ring go at the top of the piston or the second groove? I assume that's the chrome one?
Yes. Chrome on the top groove. Ken told me they are square rings so there is no marking for which way is up.

- The arrows on the crown point towards the exhaust ports, right?
Yes. Arrows towards the front/exhaust.

- What's the run in process?
There are varying opinions on this but most agree that you need to get some load on the engine while breaking them in. Don't let it idle much. Don't get stuck in traffic. Vary the speed/load ... don't cruise on the highway at constant speed (speed up/slow down) Don't rev it all the way out for the first few hundred miles. I kept it under 6k until 500 miles I believe.

Others may have different opinions on that.
