My first Honda
« on: January 06, 2015, 02:47:23 PM »
Hello All, I have been getting some valuable info on this forum to help build a 1977 CB550F Track Day / AHRMA Racer. The first Honda owned by me and I have owned many other brands, must say I am impressed with it. The street scoot I own is a 1991 Yamaha FJ1200 that is a blast to ride but I wanted something tamer for the track to learn technique over raw power. Thanks for all the members that give their great technical advise, after I make enough posts will post some pics. Then when I find the time in between building I will post some leftover parts to the forum, not much but a few things. Thanks again.

As a complete beginner there are no podiums planned, only the experience and fun!! Build-a-bike was the goal this year, it just happened a bit quicker than planned.

If you haven't run across his thread/advice, Bwaller is a helluva road racer and pilots a very trick 550. Luckily, he's Ca-na-jun and so we can keep him across the border if necessary to let others enjoy the podium  :)

Unsure if he races in NJ or even the class, but rumor is he's tough to beat when he rides. Despite being a very popular and well-liked gentleman.   :D

+1 Calj, he and the bike keep getting better every year. I think he's done a few sojourns to some of the northern US tracks on occasion.  Also true, hell of a nice guy too! Rick, enjoy the experience, we're all with you in spirit.

July AHRMA race/swap meet in NJ seems to be growing each year. Fortunate to have a daughter that lives 5 min. from the track for long weekends of learning and experience!

...and this is post #5 so next post I can attach some pics. History of this CB550F is that it was bought 10 years ago by the PO and he let it sit outside under a tarp with plans to have it restored. Saw it listed on CL for $395 and arranged to go see it, when I got there asked if the engine was free he said "I don't know it needs a battery". I pulled out the kickstarter and the engine was free, he said I knew a lot about motorcycles!! Knew right then it was coming home with me and got it for $275. Pics now  :)

Pics of Oct. 9th the day we met and some of her today. Running good so far, more tuning and then off for a dyno run in a few weeks.

Beautiful CB550 rick.  8) :)
Have you done any fine tuning to her to get the bike ready for racing & running on the track ? Generally how does she run now ?
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.

Thanks, did a complete teardown, freshened the top-end, replaced more than I want to add up!! Mainly for reliability and no leaks, this year is about riding technique. Next year more power, my street scoot is a beast and I did a parade lap during the AMA weekend on the FJ and it broke loose, too much power if there is such a thing   ;D
