This is a nightmare. These cartoonists shaped my youth. I never imagined them ending like this. In the name of what? Doesn't make any sense. I had a bad day yesterday and today doesn't look great.

May they rest in peace. Their work is done and their contribution to society fulfilled.

Kev take care and thanks for the local support. Stick to motorcycle transportation these days...

"We must secure our own Countries until this is resolved by the Islamic World"

itll never be solved by the Islamic world, they hate each other and have been at war for ever, itll never end.
They do in fact hate each other. The rich ones have been paying the Al Queda types to leave them alone and go play somewhere else. This new bunch has a different agenda so  you see airstrikes coming from them.

The French have always sat on the fence. They learned a lesson in Vietnam and remembered it well. Now, the fence has been kicked down, and they will not forget that either.

I remember our vigils after 9/11 and I have some idea what the French are feeling. My heart goes out to them.

I'm sick to death of these so called "martyr's" their death and destruction for anyone that has a difference in opinion and their quest for their mythical virgins,  they should shoot these bastards, stick their bodies inside a pig carcass and send them home ..... >:(

I agree with you about being sick of idiots who cannot tolerate other non-like-minded people. But send them home? The solution is not so simple. These guys were born and raised in France.

I've been following discussions on various media, mostly in the UK with many sentiments of the "round them up and deport them" variety. It begs the question, how do you know who to round up and where would you deport them to. These loony thugs are French ! If I recall correctly the London bombers in 2005 were British. So I agree the solution is not so simple, and other countries better watch out for the "enemy within" also.

Strange day here today, like I said a lot of people feel hurt. Many people say lots of things about the French (much of it inaccurate and dated prejudices) but what came clear to me is that freedom of speech is sacrosanct and people here are going to defend that right. Amongst the large crowd in Place de la Republique in Paris last night were a group of people with illuminated letters saying "We are not afraid". I have seen no evidence of hysterics, or a lust for vengeance, just a determination that terrorists will not prevail. We had all 1500 students gathered for a short homage and a minutes silence, and you could see that these kids all in the age group 17 ~ 19 years just cannot understand why this should happen. I need to add that reflecting the demographics in this part of France at least 30% of them are Muslim and all were there in solidarity against this outrage.

I don't know if it is what one would call irony, but in a grim twist it appears that the policeman who was on the ground, injured with his hands in the air only to be shot dead at close range is Muslim also.

I hope these twisted fcuks do get taken alive so that they can be shown for what they are. Getting killed in a shoot out will only make them martyrs in the eyes of some future wannabees.

No issue and I absolutely agree. It's just like when my compatriots were letting car bombs off all over the place and taking workers off minibuses and shooting them based on religion ? wtf ? That sort of mentality only bred further evil and we had a worsening spiral for about 25 years. Great.

It's in place a long time now, but here in France there is no religious teaching in schools and no religious symbols may be worn by students or staff. I believe it is the correct policy, there is a complete separation of state from ANY religion.

And yes Flatliner, something good will come out of this. Not least that while Charlie Hebdo normally sold 60,000 issues per week, they are printing a run of 1 million next week. And I bet they will sell. One of the gunmen shouted as they piled into their pathetic Citroen C3 (the thinking man's getaway car) "We have killed Charlie Hebdo" - ehh no sir, quite the opposite. I for one will buy a copy.

I use to think the same thing history makes it seem so. However, it isn't religion in and of itself, it's members /believers insisting theirs is the best and insist on forcing "their " beliefs on everyone else.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

i agree, it's not religion as such. it's those idiots who need some absolute, simplistic, black-and-white belief system that gives them a sense of importance and power with which they somehow think they validate themselves and can be imaginary heroes.
it can be based on religion or politics or race or whatever... unfortunately it seems like some part of humanity will always gravitate towards this crap.

man it's only morning here and look how sour and pessimistic i already sound!

News just coming in is that the two rats have surfaced again. Apparently they have stolen a car and taken at least one hostage. The area they are in is absolutely saturated with special police squads of every type so I think this could come to some sort of conclusion very soon. I hope with no more casualties.

The second hostage situation is the guy that shot and killed a cop yesterday, out of the blue.

GIGN is onto them, they don't f*ck around.

French cops are among the nicest around, I've had my fair share of run-ins with them and they always treated me well. Once I blew a red light (not easy to see, still no excuse) and got immediately pulled over by 5 cops in a patrol car. US license, brother-in-law #$%*ty loaner car (registration/insurance papers were photocopies of the actual ones...), kids in the car, etc.. I didn't deny anything, thinking 'oh well', highest ranking came back said to be careful and sent us on our way.

I want each of them to have 7 bottles of the finest Wine to go with the 7 Virgins. The only think I ask is that the bottles has a hole in it and the Virgins don't.  ;)

Kev, do French policemen carry guns?

Yes, they do at all levels. We have at the lowest level the Police Municipale who have jurisdiction only within town limits and basically are there to direct traffic, give out parking tickets and patrol the town at night. They have firearms (although it is rumoured in smaller towns they get no ammo) as well as cuffs and I think CS Gas.
(The officer killed yesterday was with the Police Municipal for only 15 days - a very soft target).
On a national level we have the Police Nationale and the Gendarmerie and they have firearms, tazers, night sticks and the rest. There are then a multitude of special police services such as CRS, BRI, RAID and the GIGN. These forces approach the level of paramilitary units, having every firearm you can think of, as well as gas, stun grenades, their own air cover etc etc
As Maurice mentioned earlier, when the GIGN go in they go in in hard, and it is usually their opponent who comes off second best. They demonstrated that twice today.
You will also see on French roads patrols of the "Douanes" the customs folk checking for smuggling especially of contraband, esp drugs. They have guns too !

I travelled France on motorcycle in mid nineties, but guns on cops is nothing you normally notice.

Truth is, the only cops I remember were on BMWs, riding side by side on country roads.
