To have shock caps or not

Hi guys,
I am replacing my shocks on a CB550K1. I found a set I like that I can order with or without the cap/covers on the top of the shocks. I prefer the look of just seeing the spring without the caps. Seeing as how the stock ones have caps, is there any functional reason for the caps? Any reason I shouldn't order them without the caps?

I think the idea was that a passenger cant get their skin/fingers holding on squished in the compressed spring?i like the open springs,also the covers only trap crud under them?

I've got caps on my Ikons, but it is simply for the reason Dave said, I carry a passenger more often than not.

The covers are to keep your wife's skirt from getting tangled up in the coils. Or your boyfriends leg hair if he's wearing shorts.. Or your wife's leg hair if that applies.

they slow you down and create drag from the suction under them not being able to feed through from the top,they can rattle, they wear the springs a little causing uneven suspension,if someone has a finger placed just so itll get sliced off first bounce.

I have ordered new Ikons when they look as Honda OEM that look fantastic with OEM 4-4 exhaust on a CB750.
Actual shocks on bike are rather good, shocks that I can restore, Marzocchi AG Strada that might be visible on my avatar.
If the bike has 4-1, cafe style, shocks without caps look really good too.

Every cb I've had so far came with them and they looked like theey did exactly what Dave says. I never thought about the finger slicing tho. Great Point.

For those who want a pair, DSS stocks aftermarket ones (covers). Identical to originals.
Pricey tho, at around 86.00 USD for the pair.

CB750 is the expensive choice. I follow my heart and restore my bike I have own since January 1979.
I have seen some newer bikes with plenty of HP for my latest restore account 2012-2015. Like a Suzuki GSXR 1000 -07
I prefer my old CB750 with half amount of HP.....
