Oh God!...it's an F model attack!
« on: January 09, 2015, 09:40:31 AM »
Whelp, I made the mistake of perusing Craigslist again....ended up with 2 750F's for $900, an F0 that is running and rideable (it still needs a lot of work!)
f attack 005 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
I already pulled all the goofy sissy bars, luggage racks, fringy leather saddle bags, highway pegs, and bulbous, grotesque king/queen seat, stupid painted tank and stuck it on the non runner F1 for "safe" keeping
f attack 006 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
I got a halfway presentable original paint tank in the deal

You've been spending too much time around Eric. Pretty soon you will need to tear down that garage on your property and build your own batcave/shop like his.

Yeah, but Eric's bike's are generally nicer for a lot less money and he keeps them forever.  I probably won't hold on to these much longer than some winter project fun then have my way with them for a while in the spring.  Here is the tank after a little rubbing compound

Sidecovers are pretty cracked up, I could save them maybe but probably better off just getting a pair from Frankenbike.  I also got some of those screw on aftermarket Maier's in the deal but they are pretty crap imo.  Anybody got a source for the correct metallic black these are supposed to be?

The initial "woo hoo I got a new running bike!" rip around the neighborhood revealed a badly wobbleing front end and the thing didn't even roll correctly around the shop.  In the process of cleaning, the probable bulk of the problem reared it's ugly, damn po induced head.  Anyone see what's wrong with this picture?

Checked out the tank a little better...was holding about a gallon of fetid gas.  Then I noticed this...uh oh.
f attack 001 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
it wiped off with wd40 and now leaks
f attack 002 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
The inside looks really clean except for a stain of rust down in the bottom.  I will clean with Acetone, Vinegar, then I got a guy who is really handy with a TIG...we will see.

Decided to see if I could get the F1 running too, as all it really missing is an exhaust, and I probably have something workable in stock ;)  Looks like there is gonna be some electrical work involved.  Tried to get the starter working.  A quick relay overhaul got it to sometimes grunt, but not spin.  The engine kicks over fine.  Next try will be the button. :o

Dove into the carbs, which came in a crate with the float bowls off and no jets....pulled jets from a gummed up K2 rack from stock.  This didn't go entirely smoothly, so I had to go digging back into more spares.
f attack 027 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
then I decided I really needed to check the needle position, resulting in more headaches.  I don't even know how I did this.  Nice to have spares though.

I really don't want to start racing on a big fat slow pig of a 750.  I got an untitled rd350 that I plan on doing that with, if I can stop wasting all my money on big fat slow pig 750's long enough to afford leathers

no the axle caps are not on backwards...the location of the F varies from year to year.  These are on the bottom....and it really doesn't matter anyway.   Just make sure they are both the same and the gap is at the back.

Hello. My name is Sean and I'm from Kalamazoo.
I have a motorcycle problem.

Why is that the first thought that popped into my head when scrolling these pics?  ;D

Yeah?  How can you tell?  I have not been able to get the little screws out to access the clips, musta got ham fisted and bent the needle.  It will be replaced.

cuz, I'm guessing, if you had access to a nice big garage, no wife or kids, you would have the same problem.

I really need to be more like you and just limit myself to a few really good ones.

Ya, not a bad problem to have, really and only having a few really good ones gets a bit boring after awhile. Nice score of the F's

Got some more work done on the F1...I managed to save that bent needle by rolling it on the mill table with a vee-block.F1 Tank 011 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
I have never found these little fuel inlet screens behind the needle valve seats on a cb750 before.  My Vf500f has them too.
F1 Tank 012 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
Also never caught this before, carbs and tops have punched dots corresponding to location on the rack.  This is carb for cylinder 2...
F1 Tank 013 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
I think cleaning cb750 carbs has somehow become therapeutic for me...

This is my fave carb dunk at the moment.  I have tested and it does not harm rubber parts when submerged for a half hour...

Next I hooked up some auxiliary fuel and the bike fired right up, idled nice, revved nice, sounded nice...I pulled an exhaust side tappet cover...and...no oil splashed out :'(.  I know from experience that this is bad.  So I shut the F1 down and proceeded to attempt an r&r of the oil system...it was pretty sludgy.
Pulled the filter and the pan.  Both were filthy.
550 etc 002 by seanbarney53, on Flickr
The F1's oil pressure light could not be got to light, so I had no idea if I even had oil pressure.  I remembered that I had a K1 oil pump with less than 3000 miles on it and I considered installing it, but after some inspection and testing of the one that was in there, it seemed like a bad gamble.
