I decided that the likely culprit was plugged oil jets.  So I cleaned everything, new filter, fresh oil, installed a pressure gauge, and fired it back up...

the numbers on this gauge are not to be trusted, it is just telling me if there is pressure or not.  I have used it on a couple different engines and it just seems to read about 20psi too high, as the engine warms and rpms lower it does move around proportionately.  So anyway, there was plenty of oil in the main gallery, and I certainly had oil pressure.

but i was still not seeing much oil in the valve cover area.  It looks pretty oily in this pic, but it is my experience that oil should be literally splashing out with the engine running, if everything is healthy

My k2 that I'm working on didn't have oil pressure. I took out the pump and found the  valve stuck open.  Fixed that and pressure came back.

I tried to let it run as long as I dared, in an effort get it hot and hopefully unplug the oil jets.  After maybe 3 or 4 minutes, I thought I could detect slightly more valve train noise, so I shut it off.  The oil tank was barely even warm.  I have decided it is better to save the valvetrain, as I know how quickly they die without the proper oil supply.  This motor will have to come out for inspection, at least.  Realistically, I probably won't get around to this until mid summer.  So here is how the F1 will sit until then.

     Also on the f0, I did get the tank cleaned out with vinegar and it is ready for my man to attempt to TIG the pinhole.  Here is what it looks like.  It looks all slimy from the WD40 protecting it from flash rust.  I have since cleaned up all the crud in the recess too.

Good to hear.  I found nothing wrong with my pump and have plenty of pressure.  Oil just isn't getting to the camshaft.

Thought I would share a little of what life in Michigan is like right now...winter sucks...I literally dream about riding motorcycles.  My shop mates have taken an interest in old vans.  These are not going anywhere for quite some time without some SERIOUS shoveling.

After 6 years of serious use, abuse, and bike hauling my '95 Chevy Van lost reverse in the middle of a Blizzard.  I had to snatch up the quickest cheapest beater I could so I could get to work.  I ended up with this for $650.  It has been sucking up wayyy to much bike time.

many would say that anyone who deals with old bikes is...I guess I would agree that the f's have significantly more dependability problems than the k6 and earlier.  And I would also say that in the case of the F2/3, they have considerably better performance as well, when they are working right...we will see how I like this F0 in a month or two.

Thanks, but I can't take the credit for it. ;)  The first F's were clearly put together right since I don't believe mine is a fluke.

...so, it looks like someone stuck a K0 diecast or a K1 motor with unstamped replacement engine cases in my F1

Unfortunately, cam and rockers did not survive the great oil famine.  Not totally sure if the damage was done before I ran the engine or not.  I did discover evidence of PO tampering, such as backwards cam bearing cap, and the probable death knell...a lack of O-rings under the cam towers at the very end of the oil passages.

So, I threw it back together with a spare K7/K8 engine as a running riding ugly mess and sold it for $900.  I keep the K0/K1 motor for a future rebuild.  Here are the craigslist pics...

So, all the while, I been cruising the F0...done about 1200 miles on it so far this season.  Ignition key switch has crapped out...replaced thanks to Ekpent, suspension and handling is still awful with that annoying bounce between 40-50mph...have swapped wheels and tires from the F1, that helped a little...tried a better but still used chain, that helped a little more...brand new Emgo rear shocks that I got cheap at a swap meet, that helped a little more...but it still overall handles awful and has that bounce.  Time to get serious, and I think this bike will be nice enough to be worth spending a little time and energy.  The plan is Tarrozi fork brace, new steering head bearings, fork oil/seals, new chain and sprockets, fresh rubber will be needed soon, and probably by then, everything will be so much better that some real rear shocks will really ice the handling cake.

But the bike runs gooood, that is, after I ditched the crappy old pods...installed a Henry Abe breadbox just for fun...

On the F0's cosmetic front...ended up lining the niceish red tank.  Used the Caswell kit.  I think it came out ok, but that stuff is a #$%* to use because it is so thick!...pics of my prep but I got to busy to take pics...this tank not get re-painted by me any time soon. 8)
In addition to the rather pricy for what you get Caswell kit, the directions recommend about $45 worth of more #$%* that you have to buy if you don't already have it around...

Here is what the F0 looks like.  I have been riding it with the bodywork from my F3.  When I get the seat recovered and the Frankenbike covers, the red bodywork goes back on, and the F3 stuff goes back to the F3. ;)

new Frankenfrankenstuff sidecovers with fresh paint from Mr. Michael Guerrella(he on the left w/ the red shirt).  I gave Mike a broken chunk of original sidecover that I got from Ekpent to match and he came up with an older Mercedes color.  Emblems are not installed cuz my shaky hand non artistic skills ass can't figure out a good way to paint 'em.

I dunno yet...actually just offered it up in trade for a '78 Chevy Van but I don't think the guy wants it...also just acquired a 77 KZ650, which the performance of kinda blows a stock cb750 away...so I got too many bikes again and need to decide between this and the KZ650...don't get me wrong though, I do like this one
