GV1390's Trattoria "Racer" V2!
« on: January 14, 2015, 07:41:07 AM »
Hello Guys & Girls,

A couple years ago I (with the help of others, primarily Sinister92/Christian) built a 77’ CB550K as some of you may have known it.  I sold it even though I never should have, here are some pictures of it along with a minty SS I also owned and sold:

I then built a turbo Miata but, it wasn’t the same as bombing around on an old vintage motorcycle. Since I was getting the itch again, I had been lurking Craigslist daily. I then stumbled upon a deal I couldn’t pass up, a lot of three- CB550’s with a bunch of spare parts, so I jumped on it. The intent was to sell the two I wasn’t using and build and keep one, and that’s what I am doing.

1978 CB550 donor:

I learned a lot from my last build, but I wanted to take it to the next level this time around…I wanted to build a bratty CB, meaty tires, GSXR front end, Excel wheels, etc etc. While this still may be true, I still may toss clip-ons on it eventually. That being said, the “build” started.

A good friend of mine, Christian made my GSXR front end work for me. Made spacers, adapter, axle, etc from scratch:

Added Biltwell bars for now:

Also running a vintage truck fog-light as my headlight:

Starting disassembling my motor. The head needed to  be decked, cleaned and have some valve guides replaced. I had them replaced with some KPMI(I think, been a while) that I had picked up from a member on here.

Sent out all of the following covers including my valve cover to get powder-coated in a hyper black color.

Accompanied by a nice Stainless Engine Bolt Kit from Alloy Boltz.

Also purchased a clear points cover from FB-stuff:

So Christian, who made my front end work, came through for me again making some nice knee dents in my tank. Also pictured is my MotoLanna seat.

Also am running  Excel Takasago 18x2.5” F&R I picked up from Buchanon’s which were re-drilled so I can run my factory hubs. Also running SS spokes I picked up from them as well. These are currently getting new AllBallz bearings and getting laced to Silver powder-coated hubs I purchased from CalJ737 (awesome dude).  I took a gamble for now with the tire concern since they are fairly cheap to test sizes out. I ran these tires on my last build and loved them, especially for the coin. I ordered Kenda K657(F&R) 110-90/18 & 130/90/18. A 130 may look funky so we shall see once I get them mounted what I’m dealing with.

This is the picture of the rear hub only, obviously not running the Cognito Moto front hub, just to show the color:

At this point, the short block will be getting soda blasted and primer/painted with some Dupli-color products I picked up. The color of the paint is an aluminum with ceramic resin (DE1650) and the primer is self-etching(DPP101). It’s also getting re-ringed with some new rings/gaskets/etc.

As of now, I’d like to purchase a CB650 cam to give it a little more oomph but still on the fence about it. The head/intake will be getting some light porting as well as a MotoGPWerks exhaust. The end is not near, but I am glad to have such knowledgeable individuals to help point me the right direction.  Stay tuned for some updates, hopefully they don't bore you! :)

I miss the two previous bikes probably as much as you do....especially since so many hand-picked parts from my own CB550 build were living on in that maroon bike of yours.

Not to muff my own thread but, check out his turbo shovel build if you're bored. Impressive work indeed.

So not much of an update but....

The hard part of my fuel tank is done, my buddy finished welding it and coated it with a Kreem tank liner.

Also, having some fitment issues with my wheel setup, hopefully this gets figured out and completed within the next couple weeks. Can't say enough how much I appreciate CalJ737 messing with this issue for me, we need more people like this guy in any sort of community.

Tonight consisted of welding the rear hoop end-piece section closed to make it look presentable and attempting to fit the frame in an abrasive cabinet to sandblast and get it ready for paint.

Going to tackle the frame this weekend hopefully, if I find time. It needs some filler/primer/paint.

Exhaust came in:

Also a Yoshi Carb Heat Shield:

Saturday I'm installing a 220v line with a sub-panel box so I can run a compressor more efficiently. Also will be adding some filler and primer to the frame/swing-arm in hope to spray it the following weekend. Also need to finagle some sort of cover for the top of the block so I can soda blast that as well and begin to prep it for primer/paint.

Daymmm! Nice stuff. Welcome to the elusive Moto GP Werks 550 Exhaust club. haha. I think a turn-down tip would be sick if it's done nice and clean.

The rear wheel looks awesome.

I should be getting my wheels next week at some point. My covers/jugs should be getting spray tomorrow evening as well. Not much progress, but some is better than none.

I'd like to polish mine up a bit, yours came out fantastic. It's so pretty that I don't want to install it when the time comes lol. Turn-down tip is deff an option, a good friend of mine is a gnarly welder, would look tits.

Haha, I know the feeling. The welds on your pipe are better than mine though.  :P

What are you doing for paint on the top end?

I'm jealous of those wheels. I only ever build wheels and forks with NOS and used factory product with progressive springs etc to keep a period correct look. Never used Excel rims or a modern front end. After seeing how some of these builds look I think I'm going to go for it on my next build. Thanks for the motivation man!

Period correct stuff reminds me of HD guys.

The jugs are getting powder-coated wrinkle black. The valve cover, side engine covers will be powder-coated hyper black. The rest of the engine will be sprayed with dupli-color silver engine paint.

FYI -- Excel are period correct.  You can also modernize the internals of your forks with emulatorsand no one can see inside your fork tubes; note that AHRMA American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association allows these fork mods, too.

I always thought Excels were more modern. Shows how much I know.  ;)

I'm well aware of Emulators though. I've just put new progressive springs in and been happy enough with the upgrade on the front. Really temped to try a modern sport bike front end though.

So yesterday a sub-panel box and 220v line went into my shop, super stoked! Next toy is a decently sized compressor.

Had my buddy stop by to start the turbo set-up on his LSX 240sx.

The CB got some filler and primer:

Next up is to finish sand-blasting my swing-arm with a few other misc. pieces. I will be installing a spare head/jugs/VC onto the block I am using so I can get in it the blaster with some soda. My wheels will be shipping out this upcoming week, hopefully more progress to come!

TY!

Primer so far has been Rubber-Seal Medallion Dual Prime Medium Gray RS-572 rattle can. Applied nicely so far. My buddy is helping me shoot it for the gloss black, he has some paint Im getting for free, not sure the specifics of it though.
