Well I've been second guessing leaving the head bare for asthetic reasons only. I agree, I hate the thought of stuff chipping. I just think it'll look odd going from silver block -> wrinkle black jugs -> bare head -> powder-coated hyper black valve cover.

eh? Maybe it'll look good? I'm over analyzing as usual, ha.

As long as the pieces are clean I think It'll all look good. haha. Anything is better than an old chipped up and corroded engine. It'll look fresh regardless of the colour combo. My vote is to leave it as is.

Whatever works for you is cool. Another thing you might think about is clean up. In the "unlikely" occurrence that you have a valve cover leak, cleaning a coated surface is much easier than bare metal.

GV... sorry to change the subject, but I see you got a carb heat shield from MotoGP Werks.  Chris also threw one in with my 550 exhaust.  Have you used one of these before?  I'm curious how the shield may affect jetting.  Will I have to jet richer since the air is cooler/denser?  Or are the affects so minimal it won't make a difference?

Also, I've noticed guys that run these on race bikes have a rubber trim around theirs to help keep the materials mated.  (picture attached) Is this something I should consider doing?

If anybody has pictures of a heat shield installed on their SOHC, I would love to see it!  Thanks in advance, and sorry for the hijack!

I'm not sure exactly how effective the heat shields are, I've never seen them on CB's until he included one truthfully. As far as jetting is concerned, that's something as with any modification will need to be tested on the actual bike with the mods, hence why these are a million different threads with different size jets on everything.

Short block got some paint, not bad for a rattle can "hodge-podge" job.

My powder-coated pieces should be in tomorrow. Then I have to find some new rings hopefully today and order them, hone the jugs and start the final assembly of the long block.

Not much of an update as I recently picked up another project....but the bike will get done before I start it anyway...

Ran into some issues with paint on my short block....some of the paint flaked off, the only thing I can think of is, I used self etching primer BUT from my understanding you're supposed to let it dry for 30mins then apply your paint. I let the primer sit for a week then I scuffed it with a scotch-brite pad, cleaned it and sprayed on top.

Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to re-blast the entire thing especially because in all other areas it looks solid.

flaking paint is a symptom of poor adhesion. If the paint and primer are both flaking, then your primer did not adhere to the block. It sounds as though you did not degrease properly the engine block.

Start over.

You cannot clean the surface of the bare metal enough before primer and paint. Sorry to tell you, but I agree with Cal. Start over.

Is the paint separating R from the primer, or the primer and paint from the aluminum?

Just leave it chipped. It adds character.

I'm not sure about temperature, but as for cleaning, you should use acetone to wipe each surface just prior to paint.  As for prep, if the motor is fully disassembled, you can blast it with soda, glass/plastic beads or sand.  If the motor is not fully disassembled, scrub it with Simple Green and a wire brush and green Scotch Brite pads.  It sucks doing it the manual way.

I didn't want to tear down the short block so I added the spare jug/head I had laying around to blast it. I used acetone to clean it the first time. Hopefully this time will be my last with some extra attention to detail. I do think the temps in my shop were deff too cold though.

Same thing happened to me when I soda blasted and painted my engine, and I took every damn precaution I could, cleaned it several times with soapy water and acetone and it STILL flaked.  I ended up just getting the engine vapor blasted.
