there is no room in the stem length to fit a dust cover on the top bearing. I installed a factory dust cover but then there are not enough threads to spin on the top triple main nut.

Fantastic pics.!  I love the background out by the Skyway.  The bike looks great too.

Scott

Thank you! Haven't been able to stay off this thing since, it's a blast.

Bump.

On Thursday I finished up tinkering with a few things and prepared for my first real "shake down" run.... so the following day a few of us packed up and headed up to Toronto for Mods N' Rockers. We got stuck in heavy traffic at the border so we pushed the bikes from US soil over to CA, it was also hot as balls out. For being a fresh build, I can't complain considering I made it there and back without a hiccup! Not a single break down! :) Of course there are things that need to be done still like; balance my tires, change my oil and install tank emblems. The show was great, had the pleasure of networking with some really awesome people. On top of that, I won a trophy for Best Custom Cycle of the show! Not bad considering there were 200-300 bikes there and a handful of trophies.

Few quick pictures:

@Sinister902 had a good time Friday:

Couple pictures Nick took at the end of the event:

You needed a little make up to take away that sweat shine! ;)

I wanted to like that 650 but the extended length of the swingarm ruined it for me.

The sweat.....oof, let me tell you - it was rough out there lol.

I completely agree. The single sided swing arm was neat to see on these bikes though. Granted you're used to massive meets but, I've never seen such a big meet, with the exception of DGR Rochester last year. Toronto really has an awesome motorcycle "scene".

Will you be attending DGR Rochester this year?

I signed up for the Niagara Falls ride.  It all depends if my kids have soccer games that day.  It is a shame there aren't more vintage bike events in this area.  All I ever see are Harleys and sportbikes.  Maybe I will switch to the Rochester ride it seems a lot bigger than the Niagara Falls ride.

I agree! Rochester had far more people over NF last year. Going to Toronto is really a tease with how awesome they have it in regards to vintage motorcycles as well as lifestyle. Let me know if you sign up for Rochester, we can ride up together if you'd like.

GV,

Since you've had a decent amount of riding experience with modern sport bikes, and a CB500/550 with stock suspension/brakes, what are your specific impressions on this restomod's handling, dampening, turn it, stability, braking (feel, stability, stopping distance), etc.?

Don,

Obviously it cannot really compare too much to my current "sport bike" which is the MV Agusta but, it surely does well for it's class. My old café CB550 had a dual front disc CB750 front end as well as CB750 disc rear and this surpasses it's handling capabilities thus far. That bike handled superb but, the turn in was a bit heavy. In my opinion, that may be due to a few different variables, primarily (in my eyes) due to weight and also suspension geometry. The handling on my current CB appears to be very nimble. With that being said, the turn in does feel good but I will be adding a damper down the road so corner/exit speed can be controlled better in a smooth fashion. As far as stability is concerned, it feels pretty darn stable and planted, especially for those awesome trail numbers. :)  Stopping distance I have not pushed it as I have a tiny reservoir tube and rather not test it fully until in safer environment; the track. It stops great though, don't get me wrong! It is just interesting going from a 140hp Italian monster to an old Japanese girl.

Overall, I am very pleased with the handling.

That is good to know Genarro. I'm super stoked for mine. Going to be so awesome. I put bronze swingarm bushings in the rear of the CB750 and have a brand new set of Hagons to go on the rear so along with the full setup with the dual disks up front, should handle a lot different. Was good to hear your thoughts on yours though buddy! Keep it up, love that bike

The CB looks awesome, congrats on getting it all done!

Many thanks for the evaluation, GV.  It's good to get some real world feedback on these modern front conversions versus our assumptions.

IF you get a chance down the road, it would be interesting to know the weight of your bike vs. the stock CB550 (approx. 425 lbs wet).  Also, when you track it, you'll have to let us know if the single front brake rotor is sufficient.

Oh I know. 60hp is no joke. BMW would murder me for sure. That was expert class, guy could ride...we exchanged places a couple times.

FYI he may have been Canadian as it was in Canada....which would explain a lot.

You might be able to out brake the S1000RR on the MV but there's no way overall you will out accelerate the S1000RR out of any corner or straight.

I had fun trading spots in my GSXR750 and my buddy's CBR1000RR at the track.  I out-cornered him and he would overtake me as soon as we were on a straight.
