Been there, At one time I think they all were 836. If you know the piston tops apart you can peek into the plug hole with a borescope or a tiny light. I had one that was an 836, 900 or 936 depending on how many beers the guy had. After I got it I took it apart for gaskets and it was stone stock. It's an 836 now. really. no kidding.

I bought a 900 that was really an 836...
Stick a small light in the plug hole or a borescope. You can usually see if it has a high dome, big valve cutouts, or bigger squishband. ...plus you could cc it..
Its a used motor, pay accordingly.
