1975 550 Minimalist Build
« on: October 17, 2014, 06:22:17 PM »
I hate the term cafe, but for lack of a better word I suppose it is of that variety. I started tearing it all down. Trying to decide where to cut and grind tabs and brackets. Also, as I was pulling it apart I was wondering if its possible to "tuck" the harness. Maybe by drilling a 1/2" hole in the big area under the tank? Would this weaken it at all? I am not running any switches or blinkers so the harness will be minimal.

Threading oyur loom through the backbone is perfectly fine provided you don't drill large holes everywhere. A hole at the front and one at the rear is good. Been done before safely.

Near in mind that pipe may be quite hot and you'll be sitting on top of it. I'd certainly coat it inside and out with ceramic costing. And probably heat wrap it too.

Yes, I've been thinking about that, I've also been thinking that after the things you mentioned I may fab up some sort of shield to go around the  outside of the wrap, more to shield it from rocks and debris. Again, this is all just theory right now. I ma not even run it that way. I just thought it would just keep a narrower profile to the whole bike.

The other thing I was really thinking about last night was my intake manifold. The goal here is to make as much power out of the stock (well stock replacement) engine. So knowing how automotive engine air intake are designed, I was wondering, just like the argument for pods vs stock airbox vs velocity stacks. Maybe something like this is in order...

I got no clue about the induction systems for a modern turbo to a vintage Honda. I do know, that I hope you are planning a major rebuild of the engine to support the turbo? Stock Pistons, valves, guides, etc won't take the labor for long. Even stock carbs are awfully lean for adding a turbo to them.

Sounds like an experiment on how quickly can you blow up a stock motor to me  :o

lol yes, I'm well aware of the risk. I'm not using stock carbs. I'm going to start out slow with low boost and see where it takes me. Its more of a personal R&D project i suppose. If she blows, she blows. If it does I have a wonderful excuse to build it.

Well, I have to say originally looking inside the tank, the rust looked so bad that I thought after the electrolytic rust removal there wouldnt be any metal left. Boy was I wrong. After the first 36 hours the whole tank looked good but the bottom was still an absolute mess. This is where I got creative. I poured about 1/2 gallon of lacquer thinner in the tank with some 3/8 self tap bolts and shook the hell out of it. Once I drained it all and flushed it out with some clean stuff I was pleasantly surprised.

I've moved away from the turbo idea. I've decided to just keep my minimalistic 550 build, well, minimal. I am still planning on running a single weber carb. Anyway, here are some updates.
