Can someone aware me on Lester Wheels??
« on: January 16, 2015, 01:49:41 PM »
I have a titled frame that I got off a forum member and I want to start my build. I am going to do something different than what I normally do. I want something that isn't stock this time around. I am also thinking about doing some mags this time around.

So whats the deal with Lester mags? I see they come in various sizes as well. What are the most desirable? What cost range am I looking at?

If I were to dip them in gold, would that be a sin??? hahhaha thanks for the help

Gold would look fine, plenty of similar style wheels in Gold, as long as its not real gold... :o  19 inch front and 18 inch rear are the desirable sizes, 19 is the only size the front comes in but a lot of the rears were 16 inch, 18 inch rears keep the stock handling characteristics as they should be....

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

An 18" front was an option but most went with the standard 19". Lots of chopper guys go for the 16" rear but as RR said the 18" rear was more desirable. Rears came in both drum and disc. I have the 19" front and 18" disc rear on my project bike.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

FWIW, a nice 19/18 rear drum set was for sale locally. Guy was asking $800.  I offered $500 and he laughed, said he wouldn't take any less.

I'm in southern california, so that's prob the very-high end of their value

19" fronts are easy to find, and a bit of non-eBay searching (swap meets) and you can have one for under $100 if its a bit grungy, but not damaged. 16" rears seem to be way more common than the 18", and it seems like they can go from $100-500 depending on condition and mood of the seller. Any nice set of vintage aftermarket mags for the big four are probably $400-700 these days.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Rocs, I have a 16" rear Lester for the CB500/550. It appears to be unused. Doesn't look to have ever had bearings or the retainer ring in it. I also have a 19" front Yamaha wheel. Looks very, very close to the Lester. Many people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I've seen people use them on the SOHC4, but I don't know what it takes to make that happen.
I even have a low mileage 16" rear tire that came off my Dad's bike when he switch to an 18" rear wheel. Shipping would probably be brutal, but I'll make you a helluva deal on them.

I've bought from him with mixed results. The last item I bought was broken, I returned it for full refund including shipping and he covered return shipping.
Like any ebay item, you need to be sure what you are buying.

 My 550F with 19"/18" Lesters.

This was my "Sweep the Floor" bike with 19"/16" Lesters. Sold this bike.

CB500/650 hybrid with 19"/18" Lesters that I restored. Paint and polished. Sold the bike, still have the wheels.

This is my "Sweep the Floor 2" bike. Still under construction. 19"/18" Henry Abe wheels.

I agree. I think I located a set of Lesters. I am going to check the bike out this week. Hopefully the rear isn't a 16

Hi Scott, I will let you know if this deal falls through. I think I would only be interested in the Lesters. Otherwise I would go spokes. If anyone else sees your post and wants them feel free to let them go.

Thanks,

Here's a pic of a Morris wheel (on the left) compared to a Kawasaki KZ clone. The Lester spokes have an "I" or "H" cross section, while the Morris have a "+" cross section.
Make sure you learn the difference between real Lesters and Yamaha clones before paying a premium price. ;)
