Please identify these parts...*parts added*
« on: October 08, 2006, 08:39:54 PM »
**Another few added at the bottom of the page.**

I picked up a box of parts from a local guy and grabbed what I needed.  There are some parts I will list on the sale forum, but I don't know what the following parts are.  I am new to the scene so if some of the parts are obvious feel free to mock me, but then tell me what they are.  ;)  Also some of them are shown at 2 different angles to get a better look.

Thanks, cleveland

Thanks a million guys!

The rest looks like it would make a nice art piece.

Nice bent rear brake rod linkage ???

coils are 1534 and 1533, are all these parts off a bike ? #1538 looks like an old car solenoid  and the other bit looks to be the stator and rotor off my old Lada's generator

are all these parts off a bike ?

The guy I got this stuff from answered a craigslist ad I had for CB750 parts.  He said this came off his CB 750 and CB 550, but I did find a few things that did not look like the others.  The guy gave me a ton of crap, some OK stuff, a few things I have not identified (this list), and a couple diamond in the rough.  I'm sure I made out good on the deal, but I don't want to toss anything that I can use or get a couple bucks back from.  Waste not, want not.

Actually, looks like the first 5 are all the starter motor, seems like it was taken apart.  The coils are the black thing, and the last one is the mount for the rear brake, w/ a bent brake rod.

I'll go along with a starter and starter pieces, coils, bent brake rod, a hand, and a cigarette butt.

The stripped down starter motor looks Ok to reassemble, brushes look good, probably got taken apart to see what was inside. the brake operating arm (with the splines) is something that gets lost when frames are restored so may be useful. the rod can be straightened out.

The first one is your points, the next one is a rectifier, new style (or is it a regulator?  I get those confused), the next one is the body where the carbs attach on a 550 (don't know an actual name, intake sleeves maybe?), and the last few are just some carbs.  You can find out what carbs you have by finding the number on them and searching these forums, should find a plethora of posts.

I have a pile that I wrote off as junk, but those coils almost went in that pile.  I'll post some of them later to see what you guys think.

Thanks again, cleveland

CLEVELAND, don't take this as an offence, but if you didn't know which parts were they -most of them pretty obvious even for the novice-, how would you know how much to ask for them? If they are junk you would be right listing them as is, just in case somebody can buy some parts cheap. Or did you think there was some unobtanium among all those pieces of metal?

unobtanium

??? I am not sure what that means.

As for my knowledge on these and other parts, well it is non existent.  That is why I came to this site, I would like to gain knowledge and information on these bikes and the parts on them.

Frankly speaking, the air box, new air filter, and chain guard that came with the 5 boxes of parts would have cost me the same amount that I paid for all 5 boxes of parts.  I thought instead of throwing parts away, I would ask for help identifying it.  I don't see any reason to throw stuff away when I don't know what it is or if it is going to be useful down the road.  Besides, it's not like I offered to sell any of it at any kind of ridicules prices.  I tried not to address the actual selling of any of this because this is not the "for sale" forum and I did not want to come off as some spammer.

If this thread has been offensive to anyone, I assure you that was not my intention.  If I don't ask the questions, I will never get the answers. ;)

unobtanium....don't watch much scifi eh?

it's a name they give to any magical material or item that fills a plot hole.

To my understanding, "unobtanium" is just a nick for anything almost impossible to find -or obtain-, but I could be wrong. What a meant is if you wanted to know if, among all those parts, could there be some rare part that people would be willing to sell a kidney in order to buy it.

LOL!  No, I just didn't want to throw anything out only to find out it would be useful or sellable.  ;)

BTW, if you thought those were novice question, just wait till you see other threads I will start.  When I decided to get a rifle I found a forum dedicated to that type of firearm and asked a ton of basic questions.  At first I got reactions similar to yours, but after acquiring a good bit of knowledge about them I have guys asking me the same questions I asked when I first got to the site.  I would suspect this happens on all kinds of forums, kind of the circle of information.  ;)

No, that's not what I was talking about. In another forum (Sanglas bikes) I'm a member of somebody registered just to say he had an original cowling and wanted to sell but didn't know how much to ask for and was asking for advice. Everybody replied the same "what's worth for you?". The guy had had the part sitting on a shelf for years and now wanted to sell, but before letting it go cheap he was asking the potential buyers how much should he ask for!!!! that's nonsense.

My experience with forums is then same than yours, people learn from the experienced ones, and with time the latter replace the former to teach new ones. But in this times of "everything is free in the internet", I believe everyone have so much credit to start with. When people help perfect strangers they do it simply to pay forward what one day they lernt. But you cannot keep asking the pros all the time -I'm not talking about YOU, I'm talking in general-, because they will get tired of answering the same questions all the time. That's what I mean with credit, I prefer to investigate myself first. Many times I will find the answer, and even if I don't, I will very probably find answer to pasts or future questions. And then, I will ask for help to others so as not to spend all my credit.

From my point there are no wrong questions. Everybody is free to ask, then it's up to yourself to reply or not.

Just by looking at the parts you posted, I feel that a few bucks+postage are a fair price for them. eBay is full of pieces like yours in better shape that end up with no bids. Put them for sale, let somebody get them at a good price and you will get some karma for the future.  ;D  Or keep the pictures coming, it's a great pastime  ;)

Numbers 1558 and 1559 look like the carbs on my 73 500, they
would also fit a 550.

One set is CB550 the other is CB750K or perhaps CB750F1 (they are prety much interchangeable) to work out which is which you will need to do some more investigating.

In my experience:
cb550 carbs in working restored polished condition = $200
cb750 "                                                   "        = $100 or less

OK, I have looked all over these carbs and I dont see and identifying numbers or markings other then "KEI * HIN JAPAN."  I know the complete set are 550's because they are too small for my 750, but not by much.  They guy I got them from said all the parts were from 550's and 750's.  Unfortunately that does not help me with the year.   ???

You should be able to find 069A stamped into the side carb where it bolts to the mounting plate - thats if they are 550F which they look like to me. The K series are different.
