starter shims
« on: January 18, 2015, 07:29:57 AM »
I pulled my starter apart yesterday, just to have a look at the brushes and give it a clean. Thankfully, everything looked good. However, when putting it back together I forgot which side the fibre shim should go on--inside or outside of the stack. On the brush end of the starter there are three metal shims--no problem there. But on the opposite end there are two metal shims and one fibre. Does the fibre go against the armature or the end cap? I have it against the end cap right now, but would love to know if that's not correct. None of the diagrams I have show the shims... Thanks for any guidance!

The plural of "anecdote" is not "data" (Borgmann 2002:5).

I've never taken one apart, but I found a couple of YouTube videos showing how to rebuild them.  I would think you might find your answer there.
