HELP!!!! IDLE ISSUE

Got a cb550 back in November have already gotten a little bit done but decided I would start posting it.

This is how she looked when I first got her
 

Found out the tank was leaking and the carbs were no longer able to be used                       
                                                                                                    
Also found a small dent in the frame which I haven’t messed with yet
 


Got new carbs and rebuilt them
               


The rear shock mount sheared off due to the PO having the wrong sized nut on it
 



So I fixed it by taping the inside of the mount for a new bolt, and just used red Loctite to hold it in, the bolt doesn’t hold any wait just pressure on it when making turns so the bolt doesn’t need to be welded in.

                                                                             
Got a new gas tank from a cb750 super sport
 


Got the tank mounted thankfully it was fairly easy.
 
This weekend I Decided to make my own air filter with the old filter box
 

Was able to get a cheap car filter from Walmart I could manipulate.

Hopefully now that its warmer the pace will pick up a bit, I’ll be updating it when I’m able.

Welcome to the forum.  It looks like you're making some good progress.

Where are you that its getting warmer.  We had a warm spell over the weekend...above 32F, now its snowing again!

Oklahoma it got up to 70 degrees over the weekend, but I don't think it will last to long

been awhile but its been cold and had little money to work with since im 15, but I finally have enough money to finish her or get really close. things will nickel and dime every chance they get.

so heres what I have gotten done


cut up the old rusted tank and made the seat body




made electronics trays







shortend the rear





made the rearset hoops





if anyone has an extra hoop they wanna give me let me know because I messed up the other one.

Welcome! Hey in your electronics tray you should really put an insulator down so the electronics are not directly touching the metal of the pan. Also they look to be very close to one another. Be careful they don't arc.

Thanks, I have a mat for the bottom and every thing will be painted before I hook it up, I haven't thought about arcing but I can always move something to the other tray since it only holds the battery.

Pretty nifty rig onthe air filter! Keep it moving man, looks good! The cut up tank looks great as the rear hump.

I wouldn't be worried about the electronics touching the tray. They were originally on a steel tray that was grounded anyway? The rectifier needs to be hooked directly to ground for it to function properly.

Considering you're 15, you're doing excellent work. Keep it up!

Thanks, I heard pods were hard to get dialed in so I made the box which is hopefully an upgrade, and also I'll look at the tray and see how close everything is as long as everything's painted that doesn't hook up to ground I think I should be good.

I'm not sure how your filter set up will be to tune. Any reason you didn't want to run the stock filter?

I know you're short of cash but you'll make some room in the electrics box if you fit a combined reg/rec. Maybe a used one from a DOHC Honda? Seem to remember fitting them to just about everything years ago ::) Just a suggestion, I think it'll be fine as is.

You're showing some good skills for a 15yr old. Been bought up around bikes?

First bike but I've worked in the garage with my dad since I was able to, I'll look into the rectifier I just got quit a bit of money so it may be an option

I have a project on the back-burner with similar specs - 550K frame, 07 GSXR 600 front, 750F tank.  You have GREAT taste!

Question: Did the 750 Super Sport tank mount right up, or did you need to make adjustments to the tunnel or mounts??  I think the 750F tank is a bit longer than the 550K tank.

the tank fit fairly easy, the front posts had to be shaved down along with the rubber about a 1/4 of an inch, each side, and here is how I mounted the rear, with my electronics tray being in the way I just made the tray more secure and put the mount on it.

Other than minor modifications to the mounts, it looks like the tunnel of the 750 tank did not need any mods, right?

haven't posted in a while but thought I would post a picture of where the bike sits now. Just finished tuning it and have been working out bugs for a while now, haven't had any problems for a month or so. Still need to finish some things on it like the seat and getting a new cognito moto wheel for the front but its almost finished.





here is some pictures of the engine rebuild had Mike Rieck port and polish the head and put new oversized intake valves, stock sized exhaust valves, valve guides, valve seats and heavy duty valve springs. had to rebuild the engine a few times because I was in a tech class and one of the classes said they would dyno and tune the bike for me. Every time they have gave it back it was burning oil and they blamed it on me after the last time I realized it was something they were doing. each time they kept putting bigger jets in the bike saying it was lean (which was do to an intake leak) so they bumped the jets up but one of the students put the #2 slide in backwards causing that cylinder to flood. The cylinder flooded so bad each time that it allowed gas pass the piston rings and it eventually would burn oil. Lesson learned don't let a tech class tune your bike.









here is some other pictures laying around. didn't use the air box I made because I was in a hurry to get it done. also rear wheel is a 150 on a 17 inch rim, has an offset sprocket and offset spacer from cognito moto. front brakes are polished gsxr 600 calipers and a hayabusa rotor. the whole front wheel is a hayabusa, the only thing you need for it to fit is shaving down the stock hayabusa axle till the wheel is centered(no longer have the measurements). using a hayabusa hub will save me money on not having to buy a custom gsxr 600 hub that runs hayabusa rotors. Using Hayabusa rotors so that when I get a 18" spoke front wheel the spokes will clear the calipers, there is also caliper spacers on there if you look closely.







 
Anyone wondering about tuning, the engine setup is pod filters, port and polish, oversized intake valves, 4 into 1 carpy exhaust that's been modified and the baffle is glass packed (the bike runs a lot better with back pressure). jetting is 110 mains, stock pilots, 2nd clip from bottom on needle, not sure of float height since I adjusted it a little but I think it is slightly raised from the 12.5mm. All tuning has been done while riding with a wideband on the bike the A/F ratio is 13.0 cruising and drops to 11.0 when on full throttle which is a little rich but  dropping jet size would make it run lean in other areas.

Nice job on fixing the rear shock mount! My bikes PO did the same thing, forcing a wrong threaded nut on there. Luckily I was able to just re-cut the thread.

Your bike looks really sweet. I really dig the 17" wide rims, along with the USD front setup.

Where did you get the rear rim and spokes? Also do you have any pictures showing the clearance on either side, between chain/shock and swing arm?

The rim and spokes are from cognito moto you just let them know your hub and they'll set you up with the right sized spokes (and hole pattern on the rim depending how wide you go). The rim is 4.25" wide so the rim comes dimpled and drilled, and as for clearance I believe I have a 1/2" on both sides. I can take pictures tomorrow evening.

What cam are you using in your motor? With oversized valves, you could end up much leanerricher in the upper ranges. Also, where have you ended up on your mixture screws?

Stock cam for now and kibble white 1mm oversized on the intake. A/F ratio is good as I'm running a wide band while riding and if anything it's a little rich on the top end. mixture screw is 2 turns out.

went for a ride yesterday and was 10 miles from the house when my clutch lever snapped at the pivot point. Had to limp the bike back, lucky I could still use the clutch as long as I didn't fully release the lever. My clutch has been hard to pull since I rebuilt it, I have new clutch plates, heavy duty spring, new seal on the cover, new cable that is routed good. So I'm wandering if maybe I got a cable with a fray in it or if the springs are too stiff. Any help will be appreciated!
