CB650 cam/rocker wear.
« on: February 16, 2015, 03:12:23 PM »
Hey guy's,

Im changing the head gasket on a friends CB650 and I noticed that the rocker arms seem to have excessive wear. The cam looks great as do the tappet screws and valve tops. Anyone know if these bikes are prone to excessive rocker wear? Every picture Ive seen has the same wear.

Without seeing pictures it's hard to imagine what you think's excessive. It should still have the hard-chrome surface in tack. If you're seeing wear beyond it, the rocker arm is toast.

All the rocker arms are well worn, right through the hardened surface. You can see a feel the damage. I know they are toast but am wondering if this is a common thing on 650s because any pictures Ive seen appear to have the same wear pattern. At 62 bucks apiece, I don't thing my friend is going to replace them all. The gray part is the worn surface, the shiny strip on the edges is the remaining hard surface. Depth of the wear is estimated at .001 - .002

Anyone?

Is this typical of these engines?

Does that whitish coloring have a rough texture to it like the hard surface has been worn through? Or is it discolouration? Do you have any polishing compound to try and clean them up with a little bit? Can you feel a difference with your fingernail between surface that is making contact and the more polished looking spots?
