Can I bench test gears?
« on: January 19, 2015, 03:49:30 PM »
I got a 71 cb500 a while back and have been working on it. Motor ran when bought it but wasnt able to ride it. Since I have broke it down and have been restoring it. The engine is out of bike and Im getting ready to work on it (New gaskets, rings, hone cylinders, etc) but dont want to go thru the top end to find out gears bad.
Is there a way to bench test the gears?
Thanks

You can see if they shift, no way to know if they pop out though.

If you do pull it apart you can inspect the shift  fork ends for wear.  Major problems will seem obvious, other than that it seems e-bayers will still sell the whole set of shift drums and you pick the parts that look best. It could be worthwhile if you want the bike to outlive you with all gears without busting into it for a shift fork that had some hardening worn off.

Was the motor stuck?   How many miles are on it?   If it is a bunch it might be worth looking in.
