Cb550f in progress...
« on: January 24, 2015, 07:36:59 AM »
Hello everyone I had started a thread a while ago on advice on purchasing a cb550f.  Well I bought her and I am in the process of cleaning her up.  I wanted to post some pictures but i need to redo my PC as the USB stack is corrupt and cant recognize usb devices.   Anyway I need your help.  i have the carbs all cleaned and apart right now.  I bought a kit that came with all new brass O-rings and the rubber that attaches the carbs to the intake manifold.  Now my exhaust is not stock it is black but is the silencer type and looks very similar to the stock exhaust.  The main Jets that were in the carbs were 105s the jets I have to replace them are stock 98s or 100s and a even smaller size that I don't remember.  The idle jets are 38.  What should I set my needle at when I took them apart they were at the second one down from the top.  The new needles which i don't know if i should use or not are thicker d26s than the ones that were in there which I cant read what size they are.  Should i clean the old needles and use them or usee the new needles and what should i set them at?  I would also like to know what i should set my mix screws and floats at.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I will post pictures as soon as i can fix my pc issue.

Thank
you

8s,
Can't help with the jetting advice off the top of my head, but as for the brass bits, general consensus is only use OEM.  Unless something is obviously mangled or waaay corroded, you probably won't need to replace what you have if it has been properly cleaned.  There are issues with other manufacturers (like Keyster) where the orifice sizes, etc aren't what they say they are.

As for the settings, look in the faq at the carb section #7 reply and there's a graphic hat has all the original set up with jet sizes, needle settings, etc.  link below.

Good luck and get us some pics when your pc woes are over.

Clean the old needles unless they are just too worn out to reuse. I doubt it. Second fom the top sounds right. Also use the 38 pilot and 100 mains for these bikes. Do you have the OEM intake airbox and filter box? That will work best. I don't have access from work to the 500-550 carbs set up sheet anymore but maybe someone else can post it up.
Post some pics if you get the chance, I miss my 550 supersport.
