 I know where there is a KZ1100 shaft. The dyno and wiring is toast so it could be cheap. The owner says it can easily be deshafted (converted to a chain drive) and fits in a standard KZ1000 frame he also has, True? And if true, desireable?

You would need an output shaft from either an 83/84 GPZ or an 81/82 J model/GPZ to convert it to chain drive. You can still get the output shafts directly from Kawasaki as far as I know.  The output shaft on the driveshaft bike is different but the input shaft is the same. All the gears are the same up until 1983 when 3rd, in and out were changed to a 19/27 set. Those are the most sought after gears for drag racing and are no longer available through Kaw. Robinson makes those gears in billet. 

As far as I know, that engine will fit into the KZ1000 frame but you will have to make motors. If I recall, at least one lines up directly but not the rest.

I meant to type; you will have to make motor mounts. Lol. Naw, the j/gpz style motor had different mount configurations than the Z1/Kz frames.
