Question for all you that live in the colder weather
« on: February 16, 2015, 10:29:15 PM »
So down here in North Carolina we aren't used to seeing a great deal of snow, and on the special occasions that we do (such as tonight) we absolutely must act like hooligans  ;)

My and my buddy got the great idea to go do a burnout on our bikes in the ice-covered parking lot where we live. Everything was fine and dandy until I tried to start my old 550 and noticed the pull throttle cable was sticking. My assumption is that due to the weather being so cold (it got down to 15, yeah yeah i know it isn't that cold but bear with me) it cause the cable to stick inside it's sheathing. My question is have any of you all ever experienced anything like this?

Usually they don't unstick without a little lube. Wait until the ice is gone to fix it, or at least get video of the carnage. Ice + Motorcycles = bad idea. Unless you stud the tires anyway.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

+1 on the video want to see that stuff.  Some people and hour or so from me race on the ice with studded tires.  Burn out with studs = broken bones.  Probably just frozen with a little water in there.  I usually replace all cables on my bikes anyhow.  Motion pro has all the cables you would need good quality and decent price.

Never had a cable stick...even after my bike has been covered in snow.

Same here, it was about -6 last night and I was out with my bike in my non-heated shed. Sometimes I sit on it and romanticize about warmer weather... Cables never felt abnormal. Something else is making it stick.

At around -5F here this week, I'm not doing any riding. The Port Dover Friday 13th bike "rally" was last week, I saw some biker types walking but no (zero, nada) bikes when I checked their street webcams. One (mentally defective or masochistic)  fellow supposedly did go on a bike - but it was a Ural 2WD sidecar rig. Around here you can deal with snow if super careful - it's not much different from loose gravel or dirt - but ice is nasty and freshly laid salt is like being on marbles. There are a few dual purpose bikes out in the area once the roads are clear and dry but not when snow is falling or after when the roads are salty slush.
For frozen cables... if you can push it to heated parking or a service bay, once it warms up and they can move shoot a bunch of WD40 through the cables followed with cable lube or light oil. If it isn't caused by water freezing, then whatever lube is in there is turning to rock when cold. The stuff in WD40 gets pretty thick when cold, I use motor oil myself for lubing cables.

Water inside the outer sleeve would be a thought. More regular maintenance. :)
Make sure the cutouts on the cable adjusters on the bars are facing down and slightly rearwards.

At this part of the year I usually wait for the snow and ice to disappear. And removal of all sand on the streets.
Panic will arise end of mars when I realize that the biking season soon is hear and I have some to fix.

Could be sticky cables................but could also be one or more sticky carburetor slides. When sitting for and extended period, E-10 fuel tends to separate in cold weather and the gasoline gets gummy.

lubricate the wires again with better and thinner oil.
Cables might be bad routed that works summertime but not in cold weather...

Anyone in the Northeast that is contemplating riding today, needs to consider moving South.  :)
Just finished shoveling 5 inches of White Scheidt (ahem that was according to the so called weathermen, but more like 8 inches).
All I can say is, throttle cables sticking was the last thing on my mind.  LOL
And Thank Goodness for Show Blowers if you gotta be stuck in the Cold Weather Regions.

It's warmed up quite a bit here and I just checked on it, throttle turns fine now. The cable are brand new too. Must have just been a little too cold for em.

You probably got some moisture build up in there, easy enough to happen. Just don't force it like a ham fist

Don't force it if it freezes, pulled the. Ends off the cables by forcing it.

Burnouts...boys will be boys :D Could be a combo of the cables sticking and the slides. Put it away and wait until it warms up. Go sledding instead.  ;)

Could be getting moisture inside the cable housing and freezing. I had an old Ford ranger pickup that the E-brake cable housing was letting moisture from the road in and then freezing after setting it. Kinda sucked getting stuck in the ski area parking lot after night skiing. Fortunately the exhaust must have melted it and we got to go home. Just a thought.
