Did you block out the opposite set of points. Place a piece of card in one set of points when your timing the other set.

Will do, thanks Paul. I never noticed 750's do that, I thought something was wrong. The miss might be old gas. It smelled OK but probably needs a drain out, fill up and some seafoam. When it warms up the miss smooths out. Could be a lean carb, I was hoping to not remove them.

Check the timing with a strobe, Don. Static timing with a lamp is only for getting it close enough to start. ;)

78 k550, yes that is a six hole made for the 75. That was a good price for the rear Lester. I thank it would be good to change to the 78 front end I thank the brakes are better.

 If we're agreeing the light thing is normal I'll forget it and time it with a strobe. The static is dead on on the first try.
  HA! I noticed it throws oil if you leave the timing plug open and fire it up.
 My brother loaned me a notebook style Honda mechanics 76-79 GL1000 service manual. He got it in the 70's when he worked at a dealership. There's a clymer manual in the folder too, it's coming apart but all the pages are readable. The manual says there's a plastic plug you could get to see the timing marks with it running.

 My 79 has single piston calipers, I was wondering if there was an upgrade using newer calipers on this front end. I was thinking there was an upgrade swap for 77/78 F 750's using newer calipers maybe there's one for 79 wings too.

That is correct Don about the plastic timing plug.  I still have one and would be willing to let you borrow it if necessary...Larry

Even with the plug, the oil splashes quite a bit and can make it hard to see, but if you drain 1 quart of oil and set it on the center stand it won't be too bad. Another method is to fit a short length of pvc pipe in the hole to contain some of the splash. Also Randakk makes a nice degree wheel that fits on the left cam pulley that works very well, but it requires you to remove the belt covers.

 I'm an old solid lifter chevy guy so a little oil splash is no big deal. Thanks Larry, that's generous of you. today it's dripping a little antifreeze out the vent hole under the water pump. My brothers bike did that until he started riding it regularly then it stopped. I'm hoping for that kind of luck. The timing wheel sounds cool, I'm going to swap out the timing belts as soon as I'm sure it's a keeper. I might have mentioned the Gates T274 are $12.39 ea. at rock auto.

It's not unusual for the pumps to seep after waking up from a long sleep. There's a good chance that it will stop after you ride it. That's a good price on the belts, and yes do replace them asap. Broken belts can cause a lot of damage.

Don R, I thank you might be able to use twin piston calipers from a 82 GL1100. I did that on my 79 CBX and it had the same calipers as my 79 GL1000 but am not sure about 78 it has a different part number.

75-77 will swap with each other
78-79 swap will do the same.
I'm not big on swappping/upgrading. Like the stock approach.

 It seems like the bike tells me if it wants to be stock. My K0 was so heavily part swapped, it became a day 2 restoration. I kept the performance parts but returned the stock cosmetics except the Lester mags and header. My F1 750 told me it wanted to be a triple disc bike, I think the engineers would have liked that. If I think I can upgrade brakes I will, the real world is filled with dumbasses just waiting to pull in front of you.

Eventually it will do damage. I'm checking plug wires next to see if there's a wear spot or anything else causing a crossfire. Cam timing is up after that.

Have you checked valve clearances yet, it's an easy job on the wings. Maybe you have an intake valve too tight, burnt or bent causing the kick back. Check cylinder leak down after the valves are set.

I plan to check the wires, then the dynamic timing (and advance good call) and lash. I'm draining the gas and starting with alcohol free fresh gas too. Somewhere in there I'll check compression.
 I'm debating on timing belts, it seems like a good enough bike to keep, I may just go ahead and put them on, checking the idlers seems like a good idea.

The belts are pretty easy to change, you don't need to pull the radiator, although that makes it easier. It doesn't cost much money and is a selling point if you decide to sell and something you would do anyway if you keep it.

If I can cure the miss it's a keeper for sure, If it's something serious it may turn into parts. I'm comitted to getting a chassis job done asap so I haven't been able to spend much time on the wing. I did learn the plug wires are like a 750, made into the coils, that sucks. On the up side GL1200 coils are cheap used, I wonder if they're points compatible.

 I did split timing according to Randakk's directions and rechecked it, timing is good, too much oil for a running check, I need to drain some out, the misfire still is there,  cranking compression was 100 on 3 cylinders 75 on 2 and it seemed to be chugging on #2 but a leak down test looked like just a few % leak. I did back off the intake valve just because the motor kept rotating due to the air. The top right motor mount/ crash bar bolt was gone. The other side was loose. hmmmm.

Those compression readings are pretty low, but I've seen the compression on these come up quite a bit after putting some miles on it. If it's been sitting a few years, there's a good chance the rings are sticking. Is it running enough to ride around a little bit?

 I used a huge tester, I suspect the long hose cut down the numbers a little, the low #2 and the chugging sound concerned me the most. The missfire feels like it could do damage, it doesn't just drop the cylinder, it kicks back. I only did what I had time for today, I'll run the valve lash tomorrow and try it again. I have an on engine valve spring checker, I'll see if it fits and check the valve travel and see if something is hanging up. now that the crash bars are off I can check the timing belts and idler too.
 The plugs are black from the choke, I tried to start it outside yesterday at 20 degrees F. No deal. Inside it fires right up.

The streets are snow covered here, no chance of me riding it any time soon.

   Actually the offending cyl. was #1. I  adjusted the valves, there was almost no valve lash, I ran out the gas, refilled with fresh no alcohol premium and a little lucas injector cleaner. It started, missed once, then a little one and hasn't done it since. I let it cycle the fan a couple times. Now I can go back to fixing the brakes and making it pretty again. I have the crash bars off so I may as well order the timing belts now. I'm thinking someone adjusted the valves incorrectly and #1 was hanging open a little. It may have had some carbon on the valve seat.  I'm thinking it wants me to take it to bike week.
