Another 650 camshaft
« on: January 22, 2015, 01:37:23 PM »
I have a blown 650 motor that I'm trying to pull the camshaft out of and i can't figure out how to get the damn thing out. I thought it would be similar to the 550 but apparently not. I can't rotate the crank either, it seems it's locked up. The two bolts holding on the cam sprocket sit perfectly where i can't get a socket on them (tried a wrench, it wanted to strip the heads). Help!

If it is locked up and you don't care, cut the chain.

if you dont trial spin the camshaft in the head and cover you are a novice, with no natural mechanical appitude, destined for destruction.

You can also use a dremel to grind the ends of to pins off. Then use a punch to push the link out to seperate the chain.

I ended up cutting it becuase the motor is trashed anyway. When I dropped the oil pan I found a chuck of metal about half the size of a golf ball. Can't wait to take the heads off and see the damage haha.

If they are I'll sell it to you cheap, I can't do anything with it anyway so it might as well go to somebody who needs it.

I'll get the head off this week sometime and make sure it's not trashed from the blown motor. If it's still good I'll shoot you some pics.

Pulled the head off, sent you an email Doggie.

Discovered why the motor was stuck in case anybody is interested. The PO told me he let it run out of oil....

Sad to say the least :'(
Looks like the head, and cam are about the only things salvagable from that motor. Hopefully you were able to part out enough of the bike to break even.

If the cam chain tensioner, and guide. Along with the primary chain tensioner are still good (not showing signs of cracking). I may be interested in those.

Are these what you wanted Ghost? The cam chain tensioner looks to be in working order but it does have a couple cracks at the bottom and top. I'm not too sure if that thing in the middle of the jugs it's the other tensioner you wanted, but if it is it looks to be fine as well, I just can't figure out how the damn thing comes out.

Those cracks are to be expected, as long as there is plenty of rubber where the chain contacts.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I just can't figure out how the damn thing comes out.

You twist it and it should come right out. If it's the same as the 550, that is.

Yes, Those are still in good shape. The Primary chain tensioner is bolted in the oil pan area. Shoot me a PM with $$ with shipping
