HP to weight
« on: January 26, 2015, 12:05:11 pm »
I spotted a 1993 Ducati Supermono at Deus Ex Machina this weekend.  Only 67 were ever built.  594cc single; 76 hp but only 267 lbs (about 1/2 of the weight of a CB750).  Superb and super rare.  Imagine if the CB750 weighed in at 1/2 its weight. . .

they are the prettiest ducatis ever made .
i love light bikes , i have a 250 aprilia that makes over 100 hp and weighs 205 lbs.  its a shame that since the demise of 250 gp's there is no where left for them to race at a decent level .

Simon, our race ass'n offered modern GP a place to race starting in 2014. Maybe the low numbers we saw wouldn't qualify as "decent level" though. I believe the numbers will increase as more people find out. The downside is available parts for some.

These things are FAST and so much fun to watch!

Don, 1978 CB550, only one built...572cc, 72hp (and climbing) @ 322lbs.   OK, OK I know it's a pathetic comparison.  ;D

yes dont forget the rider weight , when i had to stop racing i was half way through making a 250 rotax , i had made some cylinders , heads , disc valves etc that where as close to a 2005 aprilia as i could get and was keen to see how it went . a friend of mine wanted to start racing and as i had watched her riding her rgv 250 at track days i knew she was well up to it . she bought a honda rs 250 and i prepared that and my rotax for her . everyone was amazed at how fast i had got the two bikes to go , i kept my mouth shut but its surprising how well they went with a 100lb rider on board !

brent maybe one day you could come and have a ride over here , a few races at brands or donnington would be something to look back on when they are wheeling you round the old peoples home !

Hey, Simon.  See if you can hook up Brent!  ;)

That Duc pictured is a fuel-injected four-stroke single.  You might see 125 and 250 two-strokes around but not one of 67!!

the 250's we are talking about are much rarer than that cafe , only a handful made each year and very few the same .

Yeah, I think I missed the fact that you were talking about one that makes 100hp on a 200lb platform.  That IS pretty amazing.  I don't think I'd care so much for the power delivery of that two-stroke though!

Still a bike that fetches approx. or over $100K is no laughing matter.

the last of the aprilia gp 250s where supposed to make 116hp [ although i have never seen that on a dyno ] you couldn't buy one but for around a million quid you could lease one for a year .

interesting post guys, but dont believe everything written in specs sheets. I am currently finishing a TZ250 framed supermono and weight wise I can confirm: ended up with a 264 lbs bike, semi wet (with battery, oils, no gas). The only room for further weight removal would be magnesium wheels, lighter fork (mine's off a 916) and a Ti exhaust, but can't believe there's more that 15 lbs in all that, so dont believe stories about 100kg supermonos. 450 mini-monos are another story.
But power claims.... read neil spalding's story of his dev work on a duc supermono, these things had around 65 rwhp stock, only after very intensive mods he got it to 76....
my XTZ660 based power unit has been tuned by a well known dutch workshop and came with a print of a 75 rwhp dyno run. not bad for a pretty heavy re-work, but it's not an extreme hand grenade (i hope).
Nevertheless, i am really looking fwd to riding this 75rwhp/264lbs tool this season, if only manage to start the thing, that is.... rollers cant get through this single's compression. simon, might need your remote help here...

read all about the sigma supermono here
