Oiling the pin
« on: January 26, 2015, 06:18:06 PM »
What's the consensus about the best way to supply wrist pin lubrication? Holes through the underside of the boss, or horizontal slots machined in the hole? Or both? Apparently there will be milled recesses in the pin hole which help oil the pin surface, but the best way to feed the recess is the question. It seems the choice is mine.

Thanks

Good question Brett,   it seems most auto engineers stick with the options you raised.   ( except Tiny on his salt bike who installed external oil lines to inside the block with oil jets to blast oil everywhere, is that working Tiny ? )
On the old JE pistons I just put in, in addition to the standard oil holes for oil ring back to underside the piston they had a hole drilled from the centre of oil ring to the top of the wrist pin hole  ;)   I thought that was cool  8)

I think as long as you have a hole or groove allowing the whirlwind of oil fumes in the crankcase to work its magic all would be good. ;D
cheers johno

Yes, Johno, we noted that design on the Old-School J&E pistons.............but also note that the CB1000 rods have squirters on the big-end.  Maybe they could be adapted :) :)  The CB750 oil pump has plenty of capacity ...........I don't know about the unit in Brent's racer ;) ;)

Didn't some of the older GSXRs have oil jets for that purpose?
Sure there is a way

Thanks guys. Actually I use a larger capacity pump so piston oiling jets are in the plans but it's not a simple solution on this model unfortunately. The Carrillo's don't squirt either! It's a novel idea to have a drain hole from the oil ring groove, will look at that too.
