Hello from New Zealand
« on: January 26, 2015, 07:55:45 PM »
Hi everybody,

Like many others I've been absorbing a lot of information from these forums over the last few months and I guess it's time to say hi.

I am an Englishman who has been living in New Zealand for the last 10 years and I picked up my CB500 last November.

The story goes that it was an ex NZ Police Bike and was taken off the road about 20 years ago.  Recently it was cosmetically restored and destined to go into some garage or shop to gather dust as an advertising prop however I thought she deserved a new chance at life and so I made a 'spur of the moment' offer and ended up with 85% of a very clean and shiny bike.... that didn't work.

Over the last few months I've been working to get her back on the road however it became apparent soon after I got the bike home that this basically involves alot more work that originally planned.... ah well, you get what you wish for I suppose?  The intention was to get a project bike that I could learn from by getting stuck into and that's exactly what I got and probably why I am enjoying rebuilding it so much.

Despite being a complete Noob at Motorbike mechanics I am currently past the point of no return in an engine tear down and rebuild as I try and make my way into the crank cases to replace a rather saggy Primary Chain.

Couple of pictures below of what she looked like when I got her home....

If you look very closely... past the fake carbon wrapping over the once chrome rear fender and headlight... past the tank-dipped flame effect gas tank...... past the cartoon themed vinyl wrap over the chain guard.....  past the orange fork ears... past the cheap chrome exhaust tips pushed on the end of the butchered headers.... past the missing seat.... you will see potential

Thanks everybody and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Despite the cosmetic choices, looks to be a really clean bike. What's the issue other than the primary chain that warrants the tear down?

I know it's been off the road for 20 years but aside from that i have no indication as to the state of the engine other than the results of a cold compression test.  My plan was to get it running first and on the road however due to a burnt out wiring harness and shot coils I was unable to get spark initially.  After some time completely rebuilding the  electrical system I was about to start her up when I noticed the Primary Chain was eating into the engine case.

At this point I didn't want to risk starting her up until I'd checked the extent of the wear and replaced the chain.  As for the top-end... well it was just a simple case of whilst I've got it out the bike along with a large dollop of curiosity.

One other factor was that I simply do not trust the work the PO has done and I need to satisfy myself that the bike is safe before i ride it.  As I said the intent was to display the bike rather than restore it so a number of things have been done to hide issues rather than fix them.

Other than that you are right she is clean.. the frame has been nicely powder coated and the metal work polished so a lot of the labour intensive work has been done.

So she was all "Show, no Go". Well, you've got a beauty to rehab and its wise to proceed as you are.

Watching with interest-
