The first thing that comes to mind when reading this is the sign in my shop that says:
"We offer the following: Quality Parts, Fast Service, Cheap Price. You can have 2 of the above."
When it comes to pistons what you are looking for is the deletion of the most important factor.
$200 is not out of line for a 4 piston/ring set. I doubt the CSMNL parts are higher compression than stock.

CMSNL has stock stuff, or stock replacement. for performance parts you can check dynoman or cyclexchange.net.
wiseco makes pistons that are 3rd oversize for the 550 (59mm) and 10:1 compression ratio. but as powderman hints, they won't come cheap!

cyclechange does some pistons. dynoman is good but its so expensive. maybe i just buy 550 stock pistons for my 500 from cmsnl. and maybe 650 cam.

I've got the Wiseco 59s in a 500 build. They're very nice! But, they require a different cam, and rely on better air flow in the head. If you desire some more seat of the pants fun, and don't have a budget for a HP build, spend time and whatever money you have on improving the flow of the heads. There's tons of hidden HP locked away in there and uncovering it is far less expensive than any new parts.

Of course, porting the head bundled together with 550 pistons and a spicier cam will be a nice package too. But stock 550 vs 500 pistons won't do a whole lot in my opinion. Porting the head will accomplish more for less  ;)

Increasing the valve sizes beyond stock without larger piston/cam is a waste (per Mike Rieck). Again, focus on air flow and the best state of tune for the carbs and ignition and you may be pleasantly surprised. If not, the porting is a required basis for all other improvements you make later.
