750F Rear Brake caliper ? W/ Pics
« on: October 10, 2006, 09:55:36 AM »
Hey All,
I was just starting to go through things i might not be needing. I was looking at this 76 swing arm rod support, and caliper. I say hey this thing has a double piston caliper. Cool. I go look at the one installed on the bike allready. It is only a single piston. Whats up with that. The bike im putting to gether is a 76 750F with a 77 parts bike. I'm running the comstars. and the 77 swing arm and caliper. Did someone do an upgrade on the 75 I got from the junk yard?

As far as I am aware the F0 ('75) came standard with the dual piston caliper... not sure why Honda switched to the single piston in later "F" models. Perhaps someone else has an explanation?

Honda did change to single piston, some people say that the 2 piston caliper was too powerfull. Don't remember if the switch was F1 or F2

Thank's All,
2 is better than  1 :) I wondering if I should swap them?

What kinda person do you think I would be if I had Goldwing parts lying around :)

I have used both of those calipers. My F1 which is stock has the first type - double acting and when I converted a K2 to rear disc with a F1 swingarm/wheel I used the second type which came of a early DOHC
If you want a perfect stock bike go with the double acting if you want the best caliper go with the single acting.
The double piston is much more prone to seizure and is also dearer to rebuild (two of everything and they are harder to get as the F/F1 caliper was only used on that bike from my knowledge).
The later type single piston works just as well (for a rear brake) and as it was used on a few Hondas (F2, Bol Dor CBX etc) is easier to get parts for. It is also lighter.
Just my thoughts

Honda did change to single piston, some people say that the 2 piston caliper was too powerfull.

Probably some bone head read in a magazine somewhere that you want to use the front brake for the majority of your stopping power (which you do) and so he desided to make the rear brake ornimental rather than functional on all bikes.

I'm sorry, but I HATE... actually, no... DESPISE soft. soggy, or weak rear brakes. And you can't get a modern bike with, what I consider, a decent rear brake. It's pathetic. I test rode a BMW K1200R. The bike has 163 horsepower. The thing is a monster!! You have to litterally stand on that rear brake peddel to get it stop the bike. My Ducati is not much better, either.

Okay, rant over (almost).

My F1 has the stock dual piston job. Stick with that. It's the better brake.

Paul,

I think the 76 rear dual piston caliper might be the same as your Wing uses?! I know it uses the same pads. EBC FA32 according to the new blister packed set I'm planning on using this winter.
