Oil on threads?

Couldnt find any info about this in the cb 750 manual i got (original manual). Do you guys oil the threads before torquing down rod, case and head bolts?

Maby it doesnt matter at these low torques but there is some difference in torque reading if you install dry or "wet".

If it doesn't call for it in the manual, don't do it. They will call out the rare situation where a lube is required when torquing. Fasteners are intended to be torqued clean and dry unless otherwise specified.

The MANUAL does not include basic metallurgy and engineering requirements known to trained mechanics. ALWAYS apply a thin film of motor oil to the stud threads before installing the head. If you touched the head to the threads (usually one or more) wipe the thread clean with an oily cloth to remove any possible particulate. If you feel any notchy-ness when torquing.......remove the nut and clean (oily cloth) both the stud and nut threads.  Re-torquing will assure the threads are clean and properly 'stretched' to spec.

Thats how i usually do it. Guess i keep on doing it then.. Hehe. The rod bolts I usually keep clean and dry.

The only manual I have ever seen to list lubed and not lubed torque values was np435 from Novak Adapters; I go dry on anything Honda.

Akin to an oil thread.

Granted this is on HP parts, but Ken from CycleX told me to use high pressure grease on APE cyl studs and his cyl head nuts. Also to use 22ft lbs and to stage them on at 5 lbs eact iteration and back them off again. Rinse and repeat 5 times to "burnish" and acquaint the studs threads to the nuts threads. That's what tey d on their racers. Eliminates the need to retorque.

I was always taught to lightly oil the threads and where the nut will contact the washers or head. It also specifically states this in the Clymer manual for the 350-550. I'd have to assume you'd do it for all models.
