74 CB550 Rear Wheel Size?
« on: April 23, 2016, 07:17:30 AM »
Ordered tires for my 74 CB550 and the rear tire is too big for the rear wheel I have. Everywhere I looked online said the rear wheel is 18" on these bikes. Ordered an 18 x 4.00 tire and I am guessing now that I have a 16" or 17" rear wheel?

Already removed and tossed the old tires so can't look at the tire to get a size.

Did CB550s come with different rear wheel size options or did some previous owner put a non stock wheel on this bike? Here's a pic of the wheel.

That does look like a 16" rim which will take a 130/90-16.Do you see any stamped numbers on the rim itself ?

The other tire number that fits from back then was MT90-16

No markings on it. it measures 4" wide. Running a tape across the wheel it measures 17 3/8". I think I have a 16" x 4" wheel?

Did some searching and it sounds like this was a mod some people did back in the day?

Would prefer the 18" rear wheel but already had this one powdercoated so will see if I can find a tire to fit.

That's not a stock sized wheel.

OK - so it looks like a 130/90-16 or 5.00 x 16" tire should fit?

Thanks for all the responses.

You could put a nice Avon RoadRider 130/90x16 on it.

Correct, if you look on Avon's website they have charts for this. They list the minimum and maximum rim width that the tire will tolerate, all being 16 in diameter.

I'd put an 18' wheel on there.  It will handle better plus it wont have the large gap between the tire and fender [if all else is stock]

Stick some of those firestone balloon tires on there and there won't be a gap. . .  BUT SERIOUSLY - DON"T GET THOSE BALLOON TIRES!  I'm only joking around - that's a tiny wheel though.
