need help with spoke dimensions for cb550 rear wheel
« on: January 29, 2015, 05:42:34 AM »
I am trying to have my rear hub laced to a 18x3.5" harley rim. Im pretty sure Squirely had the same set up on his 550 build after doing some research. The only answer i can get from anyone is send it all to Buchanan's. I tried sending a PM to Squirely but havnt heard anything back. Can anyone give me any input?

Truing is something that takes minimal skill and tons of time to a rookie but its really doable. I was nervous as well but after 2 sets I'm pretty comfortable. Still sucks to do, but again its just time consuming.

Im not looking to true a wheel....Im Looking to find spokes for a custom wheel without spending $200 and then having to pay someone else to lace it after. The same combo has already been done and I have seen it. Im just curious if someone could enlighten me on which steps I should take and not just tell me to call Buchanans

I'm not familiar with the Harley hub you have, but as long as they're the same number of spokes:  measure the the distance from one spoke hole to one directly across on each hub.  Add or subtract 1/2 of that measure from your spokes, depending on whether the Harley hub is a larger or smaller diameter hole to hole.  If you're using some tricked out lace pattern, then all bets are off and you'll have to take a class in Geometry and Trig to get your calculations.  I used my method more than once, a long long time ago when I was lacing Triumph sprung hubs to Harley 16" rims for rigids.

Factory 1977 honda cb550f rear drum hub. 18x3.5" 40 spoke drag specialties chrome rim. No harley hubs. Im just gunna get stuff from Buchanan's. Im tired of dealing with the hassle of this. $160 for the correct size spokes. Chrome plated.
