Muffler for 4into1 - 2.5" OD
« on: January 30, 2015, 07:16:06 AM »
Hey guys,

I have a 4into1 with a OD of 2.5".  Any ideas what muffler would fit this?  It is from my 82 CB650 parts bike.

Thanks,
Jamie

Cone engineering makes 2 slipons with 2.5"ID
a 12" open reverse cone, and an 18" Quiet core.  Both are of excellent quality.

For instance this one from DCC:

Edit:  it is the same as flybox posted, just different seller.

Another vote for Cone Engineering. I purchased mine directly from them. Great people to deal with on the phone.

I've been debating both of those cone mufflers. Can anyone enlighten me on the pros/cons of each? 12" open vs. 18" quiet core. I currently have an old mac slip on (most likely, not 100%) on a 750 k3 with 4-1. It runs well with these specs: 657b carbs, 110 main, 40 idle, needle clip 4th from top, float 26mm, air screw 1 turn out. Would rejetting be needed for either of the two cone mufflers?

It would be partly based on your tollerance for loud pipes. The 12" open is very loud, but oh so good. Very free flowing compared to the Quiet Core. There is a good chance you will need to tweak the jetting with either of these mufflers.

I have the quiet core from DCC and it's not too loud. I never want a loud bike so I was a little nervous when I started it up. It is slightly louder than the stock 4-4 on my 550. I did have to rejet but mainly because I moved to pods and now to velocity stacks.

I've ran both, the 12" shorty is just too loud for my likings. You'd need to rejet for it,  queitcore it runs like a top on stock jet sizes.

I have a stock air box

Ditto on the no need for rejetting with the 18" and stock airbox.

I love the sound of mine!

I just fitted a Lossa Engineering reverse cone stainless steel shorty muffler with a 2" inlet onto my 4 into 1 collector which had a 2 1/2" outlet.

I needed about 4 inches of pipe between the two so I got an adaptor made up at the local exhaust joint.

Lossa sell the same muffler with a 2 1/2" inlet, I believe it is a Cone Engineering muffler with a Lossa badge.

Sounds good, looks good, got some tuning to do ...

So is the consensus that I would probably have to rejet for the 12" open shorty, but not the 18" quiet core? Also, anyone have any pics of which bracket you used on the muffler and how you mounted, etc.?

Cone Engineering sells weld on mounting tabs.
They work great for hanger brackets.

Yep. Get the bracket from CE.

Mine is the three-sided one that looks like the one on the MAC. It hangs from a strap on the passenger footpeg.

Parts List: http://www.coneeng.com/pdf/motorcycle/Collector%20Components%20PDF.pdf

And here it is mocked in place on mine. I just rotated the extension to get it in line with the hanging strap, which is now vertical and cut to length. I also put the center stand stop on the other side.

Thanks for the pics. Would the center stand stop not work/fit with that bracket in that location?

with stock exhaust gone, the center stand will contact the chain.
I hung a center stand stop off my L-side passenger peg.
Here's how my exhaust was mounted.

But will the stand stop work on the right? Mine is on the right with my current Mac slip on which has similar bracket mount as flybox. I have a hanger strap which connects muffler bracket to bolt through right passenger peg mounting hole which also holds stand stop. All on right. I guess if the stand stop works just as well on the left it doesn't matter what side, right?

It does not matter as long as its not resting on the chain.
