Oil pumps, how much wear is normal?
« on: March 07, 2015, 07:33:43 AM »
Hello!

I have been looking for a good oil pump for a couple of months now but cant seem to find any. The one i have now has quite a few dings in the rotors where you can see that some foreign particels has been pumped thru. The rotors still is within specs but i dont like how many dings it has.

How does everyone else do when rebuilding an engine? Is it normal to keep running with a pump with scoring in the pump?

Best regards
Johan

I haven't found an unmarked used pump. New pumps are either unobtainable or priced more than if solid gold. There are some searches going on for compatible rotor sets from other bike brands where these parts are service items (the Honda pumps most only sold complete) but as far as I know nobody has found a drop-in set.
Quite a bit of damage is fine. Particularly the scavenge pump seems to get pitted, and it doesn't seem to matter there. The smaller pressure pump seems less prone but they are always scarred somewhat. Rotor mating face pitting doesn't seem to cause serious problems, outer rotor surface and case surface wear are more serious. If the ends and case surfaces are relatively smooth check the radial clearance (feeler gauge) and end clearance (plastigage) - if they're in spec the pumps should be good to go. Replacing the seals and O-rings is recommended, I think a member here has kits available.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried having their rotors plated with something, both to fill in any pitting and also to reduce clearance.

Dings in the sides of the rotors means #$%* all, as long as the side clearance is within spec and it turns freely, it will pump well.  ;D

The F2 oil pump I put together yesterday is the same way and yeah ideally I wish there was no dings or blemishes on the rotors but I still managed to get a clearance of .002" which is well within tolerance so it's going back in.
