Missing hub damper...does it matter?
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:47:09 PM »
Hi all,

I took my custom rear wheel to the shop to have a tire mounted and balanced for the first time; when I opened up the hub tonight I realized that one of the smaller rubber hub dampers was missing. I guess my question is, if they balanced my wheel without the damper does it matter? Or do I need to buy the missing damper and have the wheel re-balanced?

Thanks :)

Sean

It is probably insignificant in the balance of the wheel because it is close to the center and not much weight.

I would definitely replace it if you can find one.

I would be inclined to fit a new rubber and call the job a good 'un. Rear wheel balancing is not as critical as the front IMO.

Then again, as you have it off, how hard would it be to take it back to the shop and ask them to re-check?

If money is a concern, you can make a pretty great static balancer yourself. I'd go ahead and throw a new damper in there, make a static balancer and see if it tends to favor one part of the wheel after it's spun. Watch a video on YouTube and you'll see how to make one. I balanced my wheels and am very happy with the results. Smooth as can be.

You can get a couple of extra bearings, remove seals, if any, clean out the grease, lightly oil, and suspend the wheel between two sawhorses on them.

Keep spinning and adding weights at the high spot till it no longer stops at any given spot.

I've done mine that way and double checked them on the local shop balancer and they are usually spot on.

Sure. If you've got nothing better to do with your time, I guess you could make a balancer. Or, you could just let the tire shop balance them when they change the tires. They do that as a part of the re & re of the tires anyway. Me? I'd rather use that time to ride.

Oh, OP, that little piece of rubber won't make any difference in the balance of your wheel, but do replace it.
