can I substitute an o ring chain with a non o ring?
« on: January 31, 2015, 01:18:51 PM »
Hey guys. I have a 1977 cb750k which runs a stock o ring chain. My friend has a brand new chain I can grab that fits perfect but it's a non o ring.  Would this be an issue?

Its not worth it in my opinion.  Why would you want to regress?

I agree.

Beyond that, never seen a non-ORing 630 chain. Maybe it was converted to 530? Some non-Orings live there.

Show me a decided advantage of O-ring over standard please. It's free fgs.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Ya my 77 cb750k is an o ring 630 with 88 links. The chain I was looking to put on is a brand new DID 630 non o ring. Figured I would give it a try. I can always throw an o ring on if I don't like it. There doesn't seem to be a problem with it fitting right. Should there be any thing else I need to worry about?

Ya, all motorcycle manufacturers switched to o-ring or x-ring chains....why?

All O ring chains do is keep dirt out. How much dirt riding do you do?

Just lube it once in awhile. You need to lube an O ring chain also.

the only difference is you will have to maintain the non o ring chain more frequently than an o ring one.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

That's partly right. You oil a chain and the dirt sticks to it. When the non o-ring chain heats with use the oil/grease thins and spreads everywhere taking fine dirt with it.

I really don't care what people do, I usually try to avoid these oil threads.  ;D

If I may take this opportunity to read between the lines. I get the impression that you are changing out the chain, and not the sprockets. Bad idea. Chain and sprockets wear at the same rate. Depending on your riding style, you can usually get 3k to 5k out of a set. But if you only change out the chain(or sprockets) it'll wear out in roughly 1/4 of that. Don't do it.

Because most people are to lazy to lube the chain regularly.   lol

My experience with them is that your riding conditions and frequency matter whether or not you need an O-ring or non O-ring chain.

When I was riding daily 100 miles a day, I wore out my O-ring chains just as frequently as I would a regular chain.

I'd be hard pressed to actually buy a non O-ring chain though - I haven't seen one in a long while.  X chains seem to be all the rage now - could never justify one.

That seems odd. I got about 12,000 miles out of an o-ring chain on my ZRX1100 and that included a could of track days.

30,000 miles of life vs. 8-10,000 if oiled every ride.

Quite agree to change the chain and sprockets at the same time - but I'd be expecting much more than 3k-5k a set. Double that at least :o

O-rings keep the dirt out AND O-rings keep the grease in.

A non O-ring should be boiled out every once in a while, and re-greases au bain-marie wise.

If maintained properly both types can hold up to 40.000 miles, maintaining a non O-ring type includes much more work.

Read here what can be achieved doing so: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=65233.0

.but only against a vell lubed "standart" thain-..a bad oiled standart chain are even vorse  friktion...
so if you not get it oiled ,,,, your thain often.
.the o ring are the best

i have big problems, boiling /greasing my thain....faund i got a high temperature grease...it not the best.. to melt in the chain..(.only grease old type thains )..
