Okay, complete and total newbie.  Know squat.  Actually, know LESS than squat..   :(

Noticed a bit of seapage around this (circled in picture) the last time I rode, but was pretty slow.  This morning, started the bike (while on it's side stand) to warm up, and gas (?) was just pumping out.  The yellow in the picture is just my lame attempt to show you what was happening...

First - what is this the lid to?  Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced, or is it more complicated than that?  If so, uh... what do I do?

Also, the stator cover leaks another fluid (oil? - told you I know nothing) and leaves a spot about the size of a nickel every night.  Short of replacing the cover, could JB weld solve that?

cant see a picture, but im assuming that the gas is coming out of the overflow valves on your carbs? if this is so your floats are sticking and not rising to to stop the flow of fuel into your float bowls, this can be solved with a carb cleaning or just a float adjustment depending on their condition. as for your stator cover, i cant tell from not seeing it but it sounds like you just need a new gasket. dont use jb weld! sooner or later your gonna need to take that cover back off.

Sorry - left out it's a tiny crack in the stator cover.  JB weld work there?  Only mention that as an option because the P.O. told me they had "fixed" the leak with it.  Figured I'd go over it again if anyone here thought it would work.

I had the exact same gas leak a couple of weeks ago. Found it was leaking out of the bowl gasket. I figured the float wasn't shutting off the fuel and seeping out of the gasket (why it wasn't coming out of the overflow, I don't know). Mine was a slight leak and I didn't have a new gasket so I just started shutting off the petcock a couple of minutes before shutting the engine off. I haven't had the problem since so I guess whatever was sticking is now free.

Looks like your bike wee'd itself.  Seriously, you have a float issue.  Maybe they are getting gummed up.  Try some Seafoam.

Last tank had seafoam in it.  Maybe that cleaned out the gunk that was filling in all the holes...   :-\

Okay, if I have a float problem, can I still ride 5 miles a day for another month, or do I need to shut down the bike and fix it NOW?

AND, If I gotta fix it right away, exactly what is it I'll be doing (i.e. what phrase should I search the archives for)?

Give the carbs a slight tap, chances are it will stop.

floats indeed...

BTW, your overflow tubes are way too short... they should vent to the GROUND not on TOP of the engine... sticky floats are a bad enough fire hazzard without distributing the leaked fuel onto the hot parts of the bike!

re: JB weld... it CAN work, but you have to do it right... everything must be surgically clean... any oil, spooge, dirt will cause the epoxy not to stick correctly... you will also need to scuff the aluminum with coarse paper to give the epoxy something to bond to... put it on heavy, then shape it after it cures... i successfully used JB weld to "fix" a broken engine case on an older gixxer motor, including a drilling and threading for a bolt casting... the low side bashed the timing cover into the case, breaking them both...

best bet is to buy a used cover on flea-bay for cheap--- at any time you should be able to find one or six...
