cb500 not charging and I ran out of beer.
« on: January 25, 2015, 05:16:06 PM »
I have a rick's Motorsport Reg/Rec combo, shorai battery and new wiring.

I drove it two days ago for about 45 minutes. Bike died and battery wasn't doing well. Pushed bike about 4 miles home which sucked! Charged and I am about full again.   :'( :'(

I have been reading posts for about 3 hours now and am just drawing a blank. It's like right before I started tackling the wiring, it seemed very overwhelming until I started. I just need some help on what to check next. Why is there not an info-graphic for THIS!!

I checked that there is continuity between all the wires and connection.
1.) Can I just connect the voltmeter to the red wire coming out of the reg/rec to test voltage? This wire I currently have running to the starter solenoid.
1.5.) If there is no voltage then test alternator?
2.) Is there a way to test that the alternator is spitting out what it should? (the white wire?)

I am just brain dead and need guidance.  :o :-\

Video to show that when giving gas the volts drop. From what I understand, they should be going up. While running it sits at 12.6 and while off it is at 13.4

Sounds like some short open pipes, or a boat header.  I can't help with the wiring but I have some beer, come on over.

Start eliminating  non essential circuits that could have failed or shoredt. Keep the ones you need to run hooked up. Disconect lights , horn, blinkers etc.  with your meter hooked up and bike running and see if the readings show any one circuit causing the drawdown.

That is a huge help on where to get started. I'll run the red directly and make sure I ran the black correctly and test tonight.

That is the first issue that needs to be rectified. (Pun intended).

I connected the red wire directly to battery just now and am getting an increase instead of decrease. Running some tests this weekend to make sure I'm in the correct ranges.

But, most importantly, did you ever get more beer?

So here I am again....

Willing to give two gallons of beer to whom ever fixes this?

So I've run the red directly to battery, black to a hot running from her switch and I still don't get a charge.
It drops steady and rpms don't change it.

If I check the red from reg/rec I'm getting an odd .60 volts, video attached. Is there a way to check of the stator puts out 14.5v? I'm thinking that maybe my combo rec/reg isn't working as should.

So after all that crap I went for a test drive and the battery is charged more than when I started the ride. I have wasted countless hours due to a horrible wiring harness that I bought from sparkmoto. I am not one for vendor shaming but this harness had the worst quality wiring (very few strands that you were able to just pull out, my cheap $20 order from ebay had better wiring), 3.9mm bullet connectors vs 3.5mm standard Honda size, nothing was soldered and horribly crimped; for the price I should have received a better product. I was hoping that by paying a company like that I would 1. support a small business and 2. get it done correctly. If anyone is considering them, please use caution. Nothing is worse than trying pinpoint which leads are bad on a brand new harness which there were SIX!

Thank you all for your help and patience!
