Kickstarter joint - stuck...
« on: February 03, 2015, 01:34:21 PM »
My joint was cracked when i bought the bike, and during the winter I've decided to fix it.
But apparently the joint won't come off, so I am wondering if I have missed something?
I've considered using a puller (picture uploaded below).

It's a CB400F.

Best Regards.

As long as you're dead certain nothing remains in the bolt hole that secures the housing to the shaft, then you can use a puller. It shouldn't be necessary though. Might be some mangled teeth on the leading edge of the shaft, or the back edge of the housing as it aligns with the teeth to come forward.

Realize, the shaft is splined in 2 sections; against the side cover, then a groove, then splined. The housing is splined on the front edge only (nearest the cover). Try pushing it back on a bit, then wiggling to align it better, then hand-pulling it off. The splined could be knackered by now, but at least you'll avoid doing further damage.

You obviously removed the bolt that clamps onto the splines, right? I don't see it in the pic so I think you're good, but it has to be removed completely, loose won't do it. Sometimes there just a lot of grit in the splines so you have to work on it. Or use a screwdriver to carefully open the split a bit.

If it's rusted or something maybe a penetrant would help? PB Blaster?

I'll try some more wiggling, more than i have already done....  >:(
And yes, the bolt is removed and everything else. As far as i can tell, the puller is kind of a last resort thing.
Appreciate the replies!
Best Regards :)

Usually a screwdriver driven in the slot a little to expand the joint works well for slotted deals like kickers, brake pedals, turn signals etc..

Yeah, last resort. If the splines are not lined up and are ruined by using the puller it will be equally as hard to get it back on.

Hit it in and out. A little motion both ways, and some lube.

This would be my first choice, usually nothing more is needed. Whack the screwdriver into the gap, leave it there and wiggle the thing off with the screwdriver still wedged in the slot, shouldn't need more than that.
