Hi,
I want to clean up the ports in my engine before I remove the valves and wondered what I could buy to spray into each port and let sit for a while to really dissolve the stuff like Gumout,etc.,only the Gumout will evaporate pretty quick...
I don't have a shop or a sand/glass bead blaster,just a storage & and Apt. so I'm doing most of the work in my apt. where it's above freezing.Looking forward to Spring  :)

I really want to do this port cleaning myself rather than paying a shop to glass bead it.

Try some Simple Green, it cleans pretty well and won't stink up the apartment.

I'll do the Simple Green as a last step.I'll put the head outside while it's soaking but something stronger would be better so I have less scraping later;the goal will be to soften/melt off as much carbon as possible before I start disassembly.

Marvel Mystery Oil will help it but you'll still have to do a good bit of scrubbing.

so if the head is off and you are removing the valves, Why not wait to clean until the valves are out.
You can spray it with gummout or brake cleaner with 1/2, 3/4" copper  plumbing cleaning brushes on a battery op drill, Then clean everything at once before assembly?

rb,
I like what you're saying about the 1/2 & 3/4" copper plumbing cleaning brushes;I was hoping to use a very strong product prior to removing the valves so I have the added benefit of letting the ports soak for a while to really soften that crap up and clean up should be much quicker.Have you used those types of brushes much? is that the correct name I should give a plumbing supply company to get the right ones ?  Thanks

I had my head blasted at local powder coating shop. Just chambers before pulling guides out and it was less than $30. Money well spent.

That's exactly what I would prefer,to have a shop glass bead blast the ports,unfortunately I had to(my stickers expired on my 87' last month..)run my car through inspection a couple days ago before I got caught riding around w/ expired stickers.. and the added expense of that destroyed my budget for the month and now I'm down to 'make those ports shine like new' w/o glass bead blasting.
That's a challenge to figure out  ::)

To bad you weren't closer....I'd it the ports and chambers for 15.00 (on a degreased head).
