Seeley Steering Head Bearing Questions
« on: February 08, 2015, 08:42:14 AM »
I am having a little trouble with the steering head bearings on my Seeley frame.  I had my fingers crossed that the frame shared the same size bearing as the stock Honda frame, but it does not.

My frame did have Timken bearing races installed.  The part numbers on those races are 07210X and 07196.  Was doing some digging and found that the tapped bearings that fit the Honda stem are numbers 07100 and L45449.  Unsure if I just need to buy those two parts and be done?  Was getting some conflicting information, almost to the point of saying that a Timken part can have the same number but different dimensions?  I am kind of lost here.

The extra dumb question that I should know the answer to is, are all the tapers the same?  Meaning if the ODs are correct, will any roller fit any race?  So if I get the right rollers to fit the stems, then they should fit the races in my Seeley frame?

Some details on the parts I have.

07210X
50.08mm OD
5.1mm large flat of taper
2.2mm small flat of taper
12.7mm “deep

07196
50.01mm OD
4.4mm larger flat of taper
2.2mm smaller flat of taper
9.5mm “deep”

Stock top race.
48.6mm OD
7.6mm “deep”

Stock bottom race was not being nice, and I didn’t remove it to measure.

Jaguar,

I considered purchasing that frame and only hesitated because of needed to pay for it sight unseen.  Congrats, you will have a lot of fun with it,

In the original posts from the people that found your frame, someone posted information on the correct bearings.  I keep all info on Seeleys, I will see if I can find the post from last summer

I do remember something about that.  Like I said I know the PO did get new races.  I just dont know what rollers to use.

Have a few other Seeley specific questions, but the steering head bearings is first on the list.

Here is the post from Scottly  (who is a great guy by the way) on what he found when he replaced the bearings on his bike.

It is post 20 in the original post that titles Seeley SH-519.

LOL ;D ;D The stock style shocks have a clevis on the bottom, while the Seeley has the clevis on the swing-arm. You need shocks with eyes on both ends.
Here's the scoop on the steering head top bearings: When I took both bearing parts to a bearing house to replace them, the guy matched up the numbers etched on them, which should have been a 2" OD outer race, with a 1" ID inner race. The outer race fit into the frame fine, but the inner race wouldn't fit the Honda stem. That's when we figured out that Seeley had opened up the ID to 1.024" (26 mm). That shouldn't be an issue, as tapered bearings are now readily available that fit the Honda stem.

There was also a post of a pic with a bearing.

I have definitely subscribed to posts about your project.  I am sure I will be learning a lot.

Funny, was just in that thread.  I had missed it.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=138822.0

Pulled the pictures of the bike, I had not seen them before.

Well the number for the race matches what I pulled out of the frame.
And the number for the roller is what I saw on line as fitting the stem.
So I guess thats what I need?
unsure about what they are talking about with the 1in ID vs the 26mm though.
