new innards are on order, carb bodies are super clean after putting these guys in some chemdip. shouldnt be long now before i can get these guys back on the bike and see if she'll start a little easier now all freshend up. a couple things though one of the pins that holds the floats in place seems to have lost an 1/8 of an inch. id like to replace it anybody know where i can order one or should i go rummaging through the hardware store?

also i noticed today there was no filters on the fuel lines i wonder if that could explain why the brass was in such bad shape and it looked like there was sand in the bottom of the bowls. anyway i got those on order too.

the filter should be within the fuel tap,dont fit inline ones,did you blow compressed air every which way through every hole in the carbs over and over?maybe remove and flush out the tank?check the filter?no good contaminating your good work.

Oooh ok then I better cancel that then.
yup my compresser was working overtime. Good idea I'll be doing all that and replacing the fuel lines after the carbs all together.

Love 'em! You'll never get 'em to run right, but you can get 'em to run right-ish, and when you do, the excessive fuel consumption pales into insignificance compared to the unrivalled babe magnetism they bestow upon your bike. You'll be the envy of your friends, who will think you are some mystical tuner from a hidden universe inhabited by deceased motorcycling icons, and your ego will be inflated by their constant and overwhelming adulatory exaltation and pleas for advice and guidance. Strangers with identity crises wearing baseball caps back to front and Metallica tour t-shirts will come up to you to comment what a 'real' bike you have, and how the Panagali parked next to it is a heap of sh1t in comparison designed for tossers who wouldn't know a wrench from a toothpick.

Back in the real world, you'll be kicking yourself for flogging your airbox on fleabay and crossing your fingers for still, clear sunny days so you can take your bike out and enjoy it ;D

carbs all done everything was pretty chewed up So I replaced almost everything. before throwing them on and put stock jets back in and set the needles back to the third clip position which I believe is stock (Please let me know if I'm wrong).
Now before throwing these on I checked out the tank and about 97% of the tank looks fine, but there are little splotches of light rust, Im thinking about removing if I can. Also noticed there is no strainer on the petcock.
 you guys have any advice if I should bother trying to get this rust out of the tank or just leave it and what the best way to go about it is? And if you guys think it's worth the 30 bucks for the strainer  or just use the inline filter I have?

Thanks calj.  I noticed as I was draining the tank that the reserve feature didn't work, I was able to drain the whole tank on the regular on position. Is the strainer what separates these two modes?

No but the reserve is the lower portion of the tank. Remove it and clean the works

The main fuel outlet draws from a tube sticking up from the petcock, reserve from the base of the petcock. The reserve fuel is whatever is below the tube top. The tube can crack or be taken off, the valve disc can be torn and leak from reserve to main.
You should de-rust the tank. Lots of stuff will do that, phosphoric acid is what I use: cement floor pre-painting etching liquid from Home Depot is cheap and powerful.
After derusting - whatever you use - you have to rinse out the chemicals with water then dry the tank (and oil it if you don't use it right away). Rinsing with pure methanol (gasline antifreeze) will soak up the remaining water, and the remaining methanol will evaporate quickly if you warm the tank a bit (no open flame for that of course!!!). Sloshing a bit of 2-stroke oil around will oil the inside and stop rusting in storage. Normal motor oil is OK but I have 2-stroke oil for a chainsaw and figure it was made to burn in a motor...
Tank coatings (POR-15 or whatever) is not needed except to seal pinholes or a fibreglass tank (ethanol eats fibreglass). The tank was not coated when new, and in normal use will not rust. If you do get water collecting in the tank bottom, use some gasline antifreeze occasionally - but just keeping the tank full will usually eliminate any water buildup. Hopefully you aren't getting gas with water from the pump!

Awesome thanks. Using the works toilet bowl cleanser now it's working great I keep sloshing it around and it's killing the rust. I ordered the strainer mostly cuz It seems to include that tube to seperate the reserve and regular fuel mode. i read acetone absorbs the water as well was gonna use that after rinsing.
I don't think I have 2 stroke motor oil right now what else would work to keep from rusting? Oil additives like seafoam or those fuel injector cleaners you put in your car's gas tank? I have an entire shelf full of chemicals, would wd40 be useful? Should I just leave it? If it's clean tomorrow id fill it with gas as soon as I have the petcock parts in (Monday or Tuesday probably).

Yes, WD40 can be used to prevent flash rusting or fill with gas immediately.

CBFIVEFITTY on those carbs did anyone tell you about pulling out and cleaning the emulsion tubes before you put everything back together?  I just did my carbs on my 76 550F and started to close them up without checking the tubes. (I thought I might tear them up getting them out) Had a change of heart last minute and boy was I glad!  They were easy to get out and they were caked. No way it would have run worth anything mid throttle.

So it's all put back together now. Tried starting her up this weekend...... And she runs! She was revving pretty high I lowered the idle speed with the adjustment screw for this video, but when I started it again it was again revving very high like in the 4000's. I would have done more but ran out of time to work on it. I'm going to attempt to synchronize them this weekend.
