*Update*

Well, I got it running.  Ran a lot better after I remembered to put the plugs back in for the vac gauges  ;D  Got a new stator cover as well.  Also rebuilt the master cylinder and put on a brand new brake caliper.  Still need to adjust the timing chain, and ignition timing.  Will get more done this weekend, including new brake pads and possibly install the Battleax's.

By the way, what's that plug that goes into the caliper piston recess for?

Also, I was wrong about the exhaust.  It IS the spigot type, and comes with new flanges that are drilled to hold the springs.  It was tight fitting together, but overall a very nice exhaust.  Still going to lose the centerstand though...

Here's a link to a vid of it running

Nice work. I saw the video with the 4-4s on it running.  Your speedo is incorrect as it looks like a black face unless you redid it. Any videos of it with the 4-1 running?

Somebody wrecked this bike HARD before it went into storage.  I think someone might have tried to get it going again and gave up, thus the not-original gas tank and speedo, among other things.

I will shoot a video of it running this weekend with the new exhaust.

Any parts you may need? I no longer have my 750 and willing to give away parts if I have them. Let me know.

I may overhaul the tach and speedo, but will need a gauge cover for at least the speedo, if not both (chrome backing).  My rear fender is shot, so need one of those.  I could also use an original seat.

I REALLY need turn signal parts: Rear mounts that bolt to the grab bar and associated hardware, signals themselves, stems, and the buzzer.

Also, my rear rim is bent, gonna need that replaced before I can ride it.  Everything else is ok on the bike for now.  Some of it will get replaced with brand new stuff from Honda sometime this year.

Thanks for the offer.

Got the exhaust mounted properly this weekend.  Used a rear drum adjuster bracket from an '03 Taurus.  Worked out great, very solid.  Took a little grinding, bending, and drilling, but it beats trying to fabricate without a welder.

Also, I cleaned up the rust inside the gas tank by pouring in vinegar and letting it set for 2 weeks.  There was still some tar left so I had to sandblast the inside.  It's not perfect, but it is SO much better than it was.

As requested, here is a link to a video of my dad starting the bike with the new exhaust (pre-bracket install).  Sounds great, revs FAST.

I had all sorts of trouble getting it to run right.  Turned out to be a pitted point.  Pulled one off a 550 points plate I had laying around.  Ran perfect once the dwell and timing was set.  Also, I replaced all those soft screws that hold the points and condensers with stainless allen bolts.  If anyone is curious about swapping, you will need 7 M4X10 screws (good luck finding them shorter), and 3 M5X10 screws.  The only one I had to shorten was the one for the felt wiper.

*Update*

Bought a new rear rim and a chain and sprocket set, so this bike will be roadworthy soon (other than just around the block).  I plan on rebuilding the front forks soon, already have the parts on hand.  Anyone ever replace the felt piston seal inside those?

Front brake is a little spongy, needs a pump or two before it feels right.  Might have to reverse bleed it.

*Update*

Turns out 2nd gear is bad, so tore the bike down to the frame yesterday and today.

Here's my dad holding the "catch of the day"

Would the moderator please move this to the project shop?

Going for a total restoration now.  Just ordered a ton of parts.  Hope to have this one back together in 6-8 weeks.  Fingers crossed.

Anybody know if $175 is a fair price to strip and powdercoat the frame?

Got a brand new seat and all turn signals and hardware as a college graduation present.  Also got a new rear rim and spoke kit.

Parts on order:

Carb Intake Boots
Bronze Swingarm Bushings
Steering Neck Taper Roller Bearings
Complete Gasket Set
Headlight and Trim Ring
Handlebars
New Handlebars Switches (both sides)
Starter Motor Cover
Clutch Chrome Cover
Front and Rear Wheel Bearings
a few bits of original Honda chrome hardware

and a bunch of odds and ends...not to mention what I already have on-hand.

I'll take that as a yes, haha.  I wonder if I should go with a satin black instead of gloss, would probably look more original.  Any suggestions for engine paint?

As long as the powder coater knows what he is doing go for it. I think motors look best in their stock color, polished or black. It depends what will fit aesthetically with the rest of the bike.

Not even a question.  Powdercoat the frame.  It is more durable to scratches and chemicals.

*Update*

Split the engine cases the other day.  Below you can see C5 for second gear, pretty much gone.  Started sandblasting parts to get ready for powdercoat.

By the way, if you want to polish your carbs, mix "Bar Keepers Friend" and water.  Let it sit in there for half an hour and then go to town with a brush.  See the picture below.

Forks were pretty bad too.  I bought a used trans in good condition off eBay for 50 bucks, should get motor back together at the same time the powdercoated parts come back.

I didn't read all the replies but if you have access to the last title holder all you need to do is have them apply for a duplicate title and then transfer that. It would be the least aggravating way to go about it. I think I will keep a permanent address here in Dawsonville where only a bill of sale is needed to register a vehicle older than 15 years old and no emission inspections here. I think I will register the Ferrari here that can't be registered in Ca. because it doesn't have Ca. smog equipment on it.

It's in another post but my brother recently passed away and left me 14 cars and 4 motorcycle projects to complete. Probate is in July and nothing will happen before then. I was going to post some teaser pics but my Adobe Flash Drive needs updating and it won't let me, so I can't view or play any pics or vids.
